Sofa Dimensions
Sofa sizes can vary so before you buy a new sofa, we recommend that you understand sofa dimensions and how they can impact a sofa's comfort and look. Refer to the diagram above to learn what each sofa measurement refers to.
Primary Sofa Measurements
Sofa Length: This refers to how many inches there are from the left edge to the right edge of the sofa. Though sofas can range anywhere between 70" and 96" long, standard three-person sofas tend to be between 71" and 86" long, and the most common length is 84". If you're looking for ample seating, opt for a long sofa with a length of 87" – 100", or consider an extra-long sofa that is over 100" in length.
Sofa Depth: This refers to how much space you will have between the front edge and the back edge of the sofa. Standard sofa depth is 35", but most measure between 32" – 40" in depth.
Sofa Height: Sofa height, or the distance from the floor to the very top of the back, ranges from 26" to 36" high. Low-back sofas tend to be sleek and modern, while high-back sofas tend to lean more traditional.
Secondary Sofa Measurements
Seat Depth: Sofa seat depth is the measurement from the front edge of the seat to the back edge of the seat or the back cushion. Sofa depths can range between 20" – 25". Seat depths of 21" and 22" are standard for those of average height, while shorter or longer depths are better suited for shorter and taller individuals. Deep-seat sofas have seats between 28" and 35" in depth and extra-deep-seat sofas have seats over 35" deep.
Seat Height: Sofa height is the distance from the floor to the top of a sofa's seat cushion. This measurement can range from 15" to 20", with most sofa seats between 17" and 18" off of the floor.
Tip!
Secondary measurements, like seat height and seat depth, matter more for comfort than for positioning. If members of your household are tall, choose a sofa with a taller seat height and a deeper seat depth. If your household is on the shorter side, these two dimensions can be less of a priority.
Standard Sofa Size
Standard three-seat sofas are usually between 71" to 86" wide, have a seat depth of 20" to 25", and have a height between 32" and 36" high.
Standard Loveseat Sizes
Designed to seat couples, loveseats are small two-seat sofas that are shorter in length than standard sofas. Aside from length, loveseat dimensions closely resemble sofa dimensions and are referenced the same way by manufacturers. Loveseats can range between 48" – 72" long, but it is common to find many that are toward the middle of the spectrum at 52" – 66" long. This makes loveseats a great option for small spaces or as a supplement to other seating.

How to Measure Your Space for a New Sofa
Before buying a new sofa, it is important to measure your space to ensure it fits. Below, we outline a quick and easy strategy for measuring your space for a new sofa.
What You'll Need
- Painter's tape
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Step 1: Consider Your Space
Consider where you want to place your sofa. Do you want it facing a TV? Will it be part of a conversation set? Knowing where you want to place it will make it easier to understand how much space you have to work with. As you choose your location, we recommend allowing for 30" of walking room in front of the sofa to preserve the natural flow of traffic through the space. If you are planning on pairing your sofa with a coffee table, ensure there is at least 12" – 18" between the two pieces of furniture.
Step 2: Tape the Area
Once you have decided where you want to place your new sofa and considered the recommended space mentioned in Step 1, use masking tape or painter's tape to mark where it will go.
Step 3: Measure the Taped Area
After your tape is positioned nicely and you're happy with the size of the rectangle you've created, measure the taped area's width and length. This information will tell you how long and deep your new sofa can be.
Step 4: Measure Hallways & Entryways
Don't forget to measure the width and height of all entry doorways and hallways that your sofa will have to be carried through upon delivery – you'll want your it to fit through the door!
Step 5: Measure Height
While the sofa height you choose is up to you, if you plan to place yours near any windowsills or under shelves, measure the height of any obstructions to ensure your sofa can fit beneath it.
If your room is large with high ceilings, it's a good idea to look for sofas on the larger side with higher backs – the open space will complement the sofa and make it look poised and grand. If you have less space available or lower ceilings, think about purchasing a shorter sofa or a compact loveseat that won't overwhelm the room.
Step 6: Enjoy Shopping & Prep for Delivery
Now that you have your space's measurements, you can easily shop for a sofa you love. You can find any product's measurements in the "Weights & Dimensions" or "Specifications" tab on a product page.

Because you've already measured any doorway, stairwell, or hallway that your new sofa will pass through, the delivery should be a smooth process. To make it even easier, clean the space where the new sofa will go and clear the path that the sofa will pass through, such as moving any furniture or wall art that the sofa might bump into, on its way to your living space.
