Sunroom Decorating Ideas for All Seasons
It’s about to become your favorite spot!
A sunroom goes on every dream-home checklist, and if you're lucky enough to own one, then it deserves the same decorating and design treatment as your other favorite rooms in the house. A sunroom acts as a bridge between being indoors and outdoors. It’s the perfect spot to kick back and relax with a book while sipping your morning coffee, and there are many ways to decorate a sunroom. With these decorating tips, you can create your dream relaxation room.
Considerations for your sunroom space.
A few things you’ll want to keep in mind with sunrooms and decor:
- Is it an all-season room? Or in other words, is it properly insulated so you can comfortably use it year-round?
- How bright is the sun? (This seems silly, but it will affect what you can put in the room!)
- What sort of access do you need to doors and windows?
Taking the above questions into consideration, let’s dig into how you can spruce up a sunroom and turn it into something that serves you and your home!
Upgrade to Multi-Use Storage
It is advisable to use your sunroom as a multifunctional space. Our sample homeowner’s sunroom space doubles as a dining space. To maximize its functionality, cabinets were installed to act as a catchall credenza. The cabinets store things like tablecloths, extra serving dishes, and extra plant pots! And the top of the cabinets are used for seasonal decor and lots of plants.
Despite the sunshine, sunrooms can get quite chilly in the off-seasons, so make sure to add in a low-pile rug to warm up the floors.
Our sample homeowner lives by the beach, so they opted for something relatively neutral and with blues and beiges to match the vibe of the house.
But this kind of rug also works well in the summer and spring, because it traps the dust and dirt from the porch before it gets tracked through the rest of the house. You can just give it a good vacuum to keep things tidy.
The best part of a sunroom is that it feels like being outside, but you’re really inside! So when you’re decorating, sit in all the corners of the room before deciding on furniture placement.
Why? Because you’ll want to put a super cozy chair or chaise in the spot with the best view! These homeowners love this corner because they can curl up with coffee in the mornings or a good book on a weekend and look out at the ocean!
The answer is yes and no. You should have window coverings on your sunroom for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, there might be times in the day when the light is too strong. For example, in our sample homeowner’s house, the sun is so low right around supper time that it can be blinding when they are eating dinner!
So it’s nice to have some sheer curtains to pull across the windows to diffuse the light.
The other reason to have sheer or plain white panels is if you have plants in your sunroom and need to control the light a little.
But try to keep your window coverings light and airy, so they don’t distract from the room or make things feel too heavy when they are pulled back.
Add in plant life
If you have even a moderate green thumb, invite plants into your sunny space to thrive and grow! Bonus points if you use colorful and cute pots and plant hangers to show off your style.
