The Right Electric Fireplace Dimensions to Spark Your Home Heating
Plug into comfort.
An electric fireplace is more than just a heating source – it’s a design feature that enhances the ambience of your home. Choosing the right electric fireplace dimensions ensures it will look cohesive in your space and provide adequate heat.
How to Measure an Electric Fireplace
Electric fireplaces are measured by height, width, and depth – each measurement affecting how it will fit into your space.
Width: A fireplace’s width is the measurement from left to right across the front of the fireplace. Standard electric fireplaces usually range from 35" to more than 75" in width. Keep in mind that TV stand fireplaces or those with built-in shelving will likely be a wider fixture.
Height: The height of an electric fireplace is the measurement from the floor to the top of the mantel, which determines how high the fireplace will fall on your wall. If you opt for a wall-mounted fireplace, the height is measured from the top edge to the bottom edge and is usually shorter than a freestanding fireplace. Depending on the type of fixture you choose, a fireplace can be anywhere from 20" to well over 40" tall.
Depth: Fireplace depth is the measurement from front to back of the fixture and will determine how far it juts out from the wall. Wall-mounted fireplaces can be as thin as 4" in depth to sit flush with your wall when installed. Standard freestanding fireplaces are usually between 10" – 15" deep.
The right electric fireplace dimensions depend on a balance between wall size, room proportions, and necessary heating capacity. If you have a large empty wall, opt for a wider fireplace to make a grand statement. For smaller walls, choose a more compact electric fireplace so as not to overwhelm the space. If you plan on mounting a TV above your fireplace, consider the height of the mantel and how it will impact your viewing experience – a fireplace that’s too tall might make the TV screen uncomfortably high.
In general, the smaller the fireplace, the smaller the heat output. Take into consideration the square footage of your room before deciding what fireplace size to choose. Choose from the following room sizes that best align with the square footage you’re trying to heat:
Small: Up to 250 sq. ft.
Medium: 250–400 sq. ft.
Large: 400–1,000 sq. ft.
Extra Large: 1,000+ sq. ft.
