Coffee Table Sizes

There are a few key measurements to keep in mind when shopping for a new coffee table – length, height, and width. Similar to finding the right end table size, it's best to measure your existing living room furniture so that the coffee table looks proportional to your space.

Coffee Table Length

Length is a very important dimension when it comes to choosing a coffee table. Because the length of the coffee table should correspond to the length of the sofa, we recommend choosing a coffee table that is approximately two-thirds of your sofa’s length. This helps create a balanced look that works well with any living room layout.

Coffee Table Height

Though most coffee tables are 16" to 18" tall, pick a coffee table that works with the height of your sofa. This ensures you can comfortably reach items on the coffee table. The top of the coffee table should be level with the top of the sofa cushions, or a few inches shorter.

Coffee Table Width & Placement

To find the ideal coffee table width for your living space, decide where you want to place it. To ensure there's enough room to walk around it, we recommend leaving 12" – 18" of space between the coffee table and the sofa. You should also leave at least 30" of space between the coffee table and other pieces of living room furniture, like the TV stand or entertainment center. To calculate the width of the perfect coffee table for your space, measure from your sofa to the TV stand or another piece of furniture, then subtract 48" (30" + 18"). This is your living room's perfect coffee table width.

End Table Sizes

Before choosing an end table, measure your existing living room furniture. This ensures that the end table you select properly fits within your space.

End Table Height

To keep items within a comfortable reach, your end table height should be similar to the height of the sofa's arms, or within 2". For example, if your sofa's arms are 22" tall, select an end table that is between 20" and 24" tall.

End Table Width

Standard end tables are typically 14" to 24" wide and work well with any sofa size. When choosing your end table width, think about how much surface space you'll need. Consider items you’ll place atop the table, like lamps, books, or plants to decide which size is best for you.
