When shopping for a mattress, a little research goes a long way in finding the right fit for a comfortable night’s sleep. Twin and twin XL mattresses may sound nearly identical, but their differences can impact your comfort depending on your height, space, and sleep preferences. Read on to learn more about their differences and what these measurements mean for your sleep setup.

Twin vs. Twin XL Dimensions

When comparing twin vs. twin XL dimensions, you'll find the biggest difference between the two is their size. A standard twin-size mattress measures 38 inches wide and 75 inches long – also the same length as a full mattress. A twin XL mattress (XL stands for extra long) is also 38 inches wide, but measures 80 inches long – the same length as a queen or king mattress. This five inch distinction may not seem like much, but it can make a world of difference to sleepers.

Twin vs. Twin XL: Similarities & Differences

Both these mattresses have the same width of 38 inches, and provide narrow, space-saving bed options that are ideal for single sleepers. They are typically used in guest bedrooms, small apartments, dorms, and in kids’ bedrooms thanks to their small footprint and budget-friendly price tag.

Twin Mattresses

  • Twin mattresses are usually slightly cheaper than twin XL options (costing between $50 and $150).
  • Since this is a popular mattress size, it’s easy to find a bed frame and linens for a twin bed.
  • Both bunk beds and daybeds commonly use standard twin mattresses.
  • Twin mattresses work best in extremely small rooms because they take up the least amount of space.
  • Children and shorter adults can comfortably use twin mattresses since they don't need the extra length.

Twin XL Mattresses

  • An extra five extra inches longer, twin XL mattresses make a big difference to people over six feet tall, preventing their feet from hanging over the end of the mattress.
  • Though they are more cost-effective than most other mattresses, twin XLs are less popular, meaning bed frames, linens, and other accessories for this mattress size are usually more expensive.
  • While both twin and twin XLs are popular in dorm rooms, the twin XL is better suited to teens and young adults who are still growing.

Note Twin XL has a secondary function: you can combine two twin XL mattresses on a split-king adjustable base to create a split-king bed (which typically measure 76 inches wide by 80 inches long).

Considerations Before Buying a Twin or Twin XL

Whether to buy a twin or a twin XL mattress depends on these key factors:

  • Sleeper Age: Children and teenagers who are still growing may be better off with a twin XL since the added length will prevent them from outgrowing the mattress too quickly.
  • Sleeper Height: A tall sleeper over six feet would be better off with a twin XL, while a shorter adult or child will be fine with either a standard twin.
  • Number of Sleepers: While it is possible for two people to sleep on a twin, it will not be as comfortable as a larger size mattress. Due to their narrow dimensions, neither a twin nor a twin XL are ideal for couples or those who share their bed with pets or children.
  • Sleep Position: These narrow mattresses are better for sleepers who do not move too much during the night. If you tend to toss and turn, you will likely need something larger.
  • Bedroom Size: A standard twin mattress will work in rooms of 7 x 9 feet or larger. A twin XL mattress requires a minimum room size of 8 x 10 feet.
  • Budget: While they are both budget-friendly options, twin XL mattresses can cost more when purchasing extras and accessories since these are a little harder to come by than those for standard twins.
