Types of Above-Ground Pools: How to Pick the Right One

There are plenty of benefits to choosing an above-ground pool. Not only are above-ground pools much more affordable than in-ground options, they're also easier to install and maintain.

Inflatable: Inflatable pools are easy to set up. Simply inflate the top ring that holds up the liner and fill the pool with water. As the water fills the pool, the inflated ring will help the pool take shape. At the end of the season, inflatable pools are equally easy to drain, deflate, and put away. This type of above-ground pool is an excellent option because of its simple design and straightforward installation.
Frame-Set: These pools consist of a strong frame (often made from steel) that supports a durable, puncture-resistant liner. The frame has a top rail, upright pool posts that hold the top rail, and a sturdy footing that keeps the posts in place. Similar to inflatable pools, frame-set pools need to be drained, disassembled, and stored during the colder months of the year. This type of above-ground pool is affordable and easy to install, which makes it a popular choice.
Hard-Sided: Hard-sided pools have a durable vinyl lining like inflatable or frame-set pools, but also feature a metal or resin exterior wall that houses the vinyl lining. Because these pools are often used as permanent structures, they require more maintenance and winterization than other types above-ground pools.

Location
Where you plan on placing the pool can also help you determine the best size or shape for your outdoor space. In addition to checking local building codes, you should place your above-ground pool away from septic tanks, property lines, and underground cables or pipes. Other factors like privacy, shade, and convenience are also worth considering.
Though above-ground pools are best installed on level soil or grass, they're often placed beside a deck or patio to extend your outdoor space and make the pool easy to access.
Pool Size & Water Depth
With plenty of sizes and shapes to choose from, the size of your above-ground pool depends on the size of your outdoor space. Make sure to only measure flat and level parts of your yard to ensure that the pool is properly supported. Filtering System: Keep your pool clean and clear with a filtering system that removes debris and recirculates the clean water. Filtering systems also improve the chlorine efficiency, which helps cut down on bacteria in the pool water.
Cover: Pool covers help prevent evaporation, prevent debris from falling in, and promote safety around the pool when it’s not in use.
Maintenance Kit: Streamline pool maintenance with a kit that comes with everything you need to keep it clean, such as a hand skimmer, scrub brush, and a pool vacuum.
Ladder: Make getting in and out of the pool easy with a ladder. Not all pools come with a ladder, so make sure to check the description to see if it is included.
Skimmer: A skimmer filters debris (like leaves, hair, or dirt) from the pool water. There are built-in pool skimmers that suck water in, filter out the debris, and push the clean water back out. There are also hand skimmers that feature a basket-style net at the end of a long stick so that you can manually skim debris from the pool.
