Can openers are one of those simple but indispensable tools you don't often consider – until you need one. These common kitchen staples are used to remove the lids off and open up tin cans in the quickest and easiest way possible. In terms of designs, there are two main types of can openers available to choose from. In this guide we'll delve a little deeper into the different types of can openers and how to use them.

Almost every household uses canned goods in some way – even those that cook with fresh produce can benefit from these non-perishable options. Whether it's a can of tomatoes to whip up a pasta sauce, veggies for dinner,, or even tinned food for your pets – it's likely you'll encounter cans at some point! The two primary types of can openers available are standard (manual) and electric.

Note: Can openers can function in one of two ways – top-cut which means cutting down into the can lid from the top, and side-cut which cuts the side of the can to remove the lid. Side-cuts often create a smoother edge that is less likely to injure you.

Standard Can Opener

The standard can opener is a favorite that has been in households for decades. This two-arm handheld device uses a crank to rotate the can against the blade in order to cut the top off. There are a number of reasons people gravitate towards this type of can opener.

  • Reliable and timeless design
  • Easy to use
  • Small size saves space in drawers
  • No batteries or electricity required
  • Can easily be taken on camping trips and other locations
  • There are very few reasons it would stop working

That being said, there are a few drawbacks to a standard can opener. The first is it requires two hands to use – something that can be difficult for people with mobility issues (particularly the crank handle). The design can also be difficult for left-handed people to operate. And finally, traditional can openers usually create a sharp or jagged edge on the lid.

Tip!

You can use a traditional can opener on pull-tabs, you simply need to pierce the lid with the cutting wheels of the opener first. Also make sure to clean your opener between uses to ensure no residue is left behind to build up over time.

Electric Can Opener

There are two versions of the electric can opener – the electric and the handheld electric option. Both use batteries and function fairly similarly with the use of automatic mechanisms.

Electric: This large can opener is often placed on the countertop. It functions via the use of a magnet and cutting device. All you need to do is let the magnet attach to the top of the can and press down the lever to allow the machine to open the can for you. Typically the lid will remain attached to the magnet so you can remove and discard it yourself.

Handheld Electric: This option requires you to place the device on the top of the can yourself so the integrated magnet on the back of the opener holds the can in place. You depress the button to start and allow it to automatically open the can for you. The cut lid typically sticks to the magnet of the opener when you pull it off.
Many people prefer the electric can opener for a number of reasons.

  • Simply pressing the button will make the device work
  • No physical strain is required to open the can
  • One-handed operation
  • Good for seniors with arthritis and people with other mobility issues
  • Much quicker than the standard opener
  • Produces a smooth and safe lid edge

The few drawbacks of an electric can opener is the learning curve – you must learn how to use it correctly. Additionally, in the event you don't have batteries (or they run out), or it malfunctions, you will not be able to use it. Finally, the larger electric model can take up a fair amount of counter space.
