Vanity Mirror Size Guide & Placement Considerations

1. Choose a Mirror Size Based on Your Vanity Width

As a general rule of thumb, a bathroom wall mirror should never be wider than the vanity that it hangs over. Ideally, the mirror should be 2" – 4" narrower than the vanity on each side for a proportional look. Don’t go too small though – your bathroom mirror should be at least the width of the sink it is centered over, if not larger. When shopping for a vanity mirror, here are some general dimension guidelines and common use cases to consider when choosing a size:

Small (Under 20"): Mirrors under 20" are typically found in powder rooms and over narrow single vanities or pedestal sinks. They can also be hung in pairs over standard double vanities.

Medium (20" – 40"): Mirrors between 20" – 40" are best for average-sized residential bathrooms with standard single vanities. They can also be hung in pairs over large double vanities.

Large (40" – 60"): Large mirrors between 40" – 60" are most commonly found in large bathrooms where they span two sinks of a standard double vanity.

Oversized (Over 60"): Mirrors that are 60" or larger are considered oversized and are best fit for large en suite bathrooms, extra-long double vanities, and wall-to-wall designs.

2. Factor In Space for Mirror Placement

In addition to the width of your vanity, the height of your faucet, position of light fixtures, available wall space, and ceiling height will also affect the size mirror you should choose. Review the spacing recommendations below to help you determine the ideal height and width of your vanity mirror.

Single Vanity Mirror Placement Considerations

The size and placement of your mirror impacts its functionality, so it’s important to choose one that provides full and easy viewing. No matter the size you choose, keep in mind that the center of the mirror should be around eye level, or approximately 60" – 65" off the floor.

When hanging a mirror over a single vanity, center it above the sink and choose a mirror width that is 2" – 4" narrower than the vanity on either side. If you’re mounting a mirror between two wall sconces, leave at least 2" – 6" of space between the edges of the mirror and the wall sconces for an evenly lit vanity space.

The bottom edge of the mirror should be 5" – 10" above the vanity countertop to prevent water splashes from the faucet. You’ll also want at least 5" – 10" between the top edge of the mirror and your ceiling. If you’re hanging the mirror under vanity lighting, leave 3" – 6" of space between the top of the mirror and the light fixture to reduce glare.

Double Vanity Mirror Placement Considerations

To hang one large horizontal mirror across two sinks, follow the same placement guidelines as above. If you opt to hang two mirrors above a double vanity, you’ll need to factor in additional spacing between the mirrors to avoid a crowded look. The same spacing recommendations to accommodate lights, ceiling height, and faucets still apply.

The total combined width of the mirrors should not exceed the width of the vanity. Each mirror should have 2" – 4" between its outer edge and the edge of the vanity. It’s important to center each mirror above a sink but you’ll want to leave at least 4" – 6" between the mirrors for balanced spacing.

3. Consider the Aesthetics of Mirror Size

While functionality is important, don’t forget to consider the aesthetics of different size vanity mirrors and the design impact they will have on your bathroom. Opting for one large mirror over a double vanity can make your bathroom feel more modern and minimalistic. On the other hand, placing two mirrors side by side gives the walls more dimension and can add visual interest in large bathrooms. If you have a small bathroom, choose the largest possible mirror without sacrificing proportions to make the room feel more spacious.
