What Is a Bassinet?

A bassinet is a bed designed for infants, specifically from birth to roughly four months of age. Their small size makes them perfect for tight spaces or temporary nurseries. For example, if you want your newborn to sleep in the same bedroom as you for the first few months, a bassinet will do the trick and won't take up too much space. Bassinets are often compared to cradles, which are also specially made for newborns. Traditionally, bassinets were stationary, while cradles provided some sort of rocking motion. However, nowadays, both bassinets and cradles can be stationary or have a rocking feature.

While cribs have high sides and are heavier, they are a more permanent sleeping arrangement for a child. Meanwhile, most bassinets are lightweight and portable, making them great for travel or storage once your baby has grown. Their sides are a lot lower so it is much easier getting your infant in and out of the bassinet. The frame of a bassinet is most commonly metal, but plastic and wood are popular alternatives. Traditional bassinets have a hood that is used to cover the baby when they are sleeping.

How to Get a Baby to Sleep in a Bassinet

Here are some tips to help your baby fall asleep quickly in their bassinet:

Share a Room: It is recommended that newborns sleep in the same room as you for the first few months of their lives, but sleeping in your adult bed is not a safe option. Instead, place the bassinet in your master bedroom, as close or far from your bed as you wish. This will help comfort your baby to see you nearby.

Lull Them to Sleep: Many bassinets come with features that will help lull your little one to sleep. Try out vibrating bassinets and rocking bassinets for some extra help getting them to snooze.

Keep Them Close: Wherever you go, your baby can too. Bassinets with gliders give you the freedom to carry your baby around the house with you. Engage in a calm, relaxing activity and your newborn is sure to doze off quietly next to you.

How Long Can a Baby Sleep in a Bassinet?

Most bassinets have weight limits which will be stated in the manufacturer's instructions. When your infant nears this limit, it is time to transition them over to a crib. Additionally, once your baby develops free movement, including rolling, standing, or sitting by themselves, it is time to transition to a crib.
