What Is a Carport?

Is a carport the backyard addition you've been missing?

Carports/canopies are great additions to your outdoor space to protect your belongings from the weather or provide a spot of shade in the yard. The main difference between a canopy and a carport is that a canopy is usually open on all sides and covered with an overhead cloth, while a carport has a hard roof and typically fully enclosed except for one open side. Coming in fabric or metal construction, pop up carports are especially easy and convenient to assemble.

Plastic: Although it may seem a weaker option, there are several advantages to plastic carports. Most notably, their impact resistance. The durable high-strength fabric is strong against sun, wind, and rain. With little to no tools required, plastic carports with metal frames are perfect to assemble in a pinch if your outdoor event is suddenly threatened to get a little damp.

Wood: This structure make with a strong cedar frame and steel roof, is substantial to resist all weather including hail and several inches of snow. A more long-term solution, a wood carport can be installed and mounted with the tools provided and stand for several years.

Vinyl: This carport material is made of triple-layer ripstop polyethylene that's UV-treated with added fade blockers, and anti-aging and anti-fungal agents to safely preserve its contents. It is recommended to deconstruct these in cases of extreme weather.

1-Car Capacity: These smaller carports are great for a single vehicle, and measure under 13 feet in length. With plenty of room to store other things than just your car, you can keep outdoor tools, mowers, and outdoor toys in ample space.

2-Car Capacity: The typical 2-car carport size can cover two sports cars and range from 13 to 20 feet in length. These dimensions are optimal because they leave a space of about 3 ft. around all sides to give enough room between the sides of your car and the frame. For extra protection, you could utilize this size for a padded single vehicle cover.

3-Car Capacity: The largest, this carport size is especially long to store trucks and their supplementary trailers. Coming in at over 20 feet long, these carports provide shelter on long driveways leading up to ancillary barns or attached garages.
