What is a counter-depth refrigerator? A common question for those who are looking to remodel their kitchen or upgrade appliances – or for those who are just curious. This guide will explain what counter-depth refrigerators are, the benefits of having one, and the different options available when selecting one.

What Is a Counter-Depth Refrigerator?

Counter-depth refrigerators are named for the dimensions of their depth. They are typically around 24" to 25" deep, which is the depth of standard countertops. The name “counter-depth'' refrigerator is not synonymous with “shallow-depth” refrigerators. While a shallow-depth refrigerator may be a counter-depth refrigerator, the opposite isn't always true. This is because shallow-depth refrigerators can be as shallow as 23" or as deep as 27", exceeding the depth limit of a counter-depth refrigerator.

Well-Hidden: One of the most loved benefits of counter-depth refrigerators can be seen in the photo above – because of its depth, the fridge looks built into the cabinetry. Further, counter-depth fridges are perfect for custom panels that will blend seamlessly with existing cabinetry to take your kitchen decor style to the next level. Having something big and bulky in your kitchen can take away from the original design. Counter-depth refrigerators are perfect for those who have a specific vision or prefer a more minimalistic style.

Fewer Accidents: Because counter-depth refrigerators are made to line up with the depth of your counter, there won’t be any extra fridge protruding from the wall. This means you can say goodbye to bumping yourself against the fridge in the middle of the night because you couldn’t see that it was sticking out. Counter-depth refrigerators are also ideal for homes with active children that can’t seem to stop running everywhere. Prevent future ouchies with a counter-depth refrigerator that is practically accident-proof.

More Storage: Looks aside, counter-depth refrigerators have more to offer when it comes to storage. Because these fridges can be more shallow than others, to compensate, counter-depth refrigerators tend to be taller and/or wider. This benefits those who have more vertical and horizontal space available but don’t want their refrigerator to impose upon the middle of the kitchen.

Food Savers: Counter-depth refrigerators can also help eliminate food waste. Have you ever reached deep into the back of the fridge, only to find something that was made weeks ago? Since a counter-depth fridge is more shallow, there is no place for food to hide! Instead of food being stored in front of other food, most of your items will now be side by side, thus preventing anything from going unnoticed.
