Types of Power Sources

Wall sconces can have one of three power sources. The power source you go with can influence the skill-level required for installation. Plug-in and battery-operated wall sconces are the easiest to install, but hardwired sconces provide a permanent light source minus power cords or battery change-outs. Review your options, below.

Hardwired: Hardwired sconces require set up by an electrician. Sconces with this type of power source uses your home’s electricity and is connected to a switch. This makes turning on and off your sconces easy. This is also the most aesthetically pleasing option as all of the cords are tucked away behind a wall.

Plug-In: Sconces that have a plug-in power source are powered by a cord. Simply plug the cord into an outlet and there will be light. These types of sconces allow you to have light anywhere there is an outlet. This is a good option for renters who might not be able to put holes into the wall.

Battery-Operated: Battery-operated sconces are powered by batteries. The holder is typically tucked behind the sconce. This allows the sconce to be attached to the wall without professional installation and leaves unsightly cords out of the process.
