What is an iron, you ask? An iron is a small appliance that has a metal plate on one side of it. This metal plate is heated when turned on and used to press wrinkles out of fabrics. Irons are typically used with ironing boards, which are special boards designed to withstand the heat generated by the iron.

How to Use an Iron

Before you iron, you’ll need to set up a few key items: your ironing board, and a spray bottle filled with one part starch and one part water. Starch is optional but helps to keep clothing stiff in order to prevent wrinkles during wear.

After you’ve set up your ironing board, take a look at your clothing and figure out what kind of fabric it is. Then set your iron to that setting. Give your iron 2 – 5 minutes to heat up. While you wait, lay your item of clothing on the ironing board. If you can, lay down one side at a time rather than ironing through two pieces of fabric.

Once it is fully heated, work in small sections. Spray starch or water on the section and then go over it with the iron.

Now that this guide has answered the question “What is an iron?” and explained types of irons, and how to use an iron, you can feel confident in choosing the correct one for you.
