Your Guide to Air Mattress Sizes

Plus important size considerations.

Air mattresses come in all the same sizes as standard mattresses to ensure you and/or overnight guests have adequate space to sleep. This guide goes over your size options and tips/considerations for choosing the right one.

Twin: 39" x 75"

Twin air mattresses are the perfect size to accommodate the sleeping needs of one child or adult. Their size also makes them a space-friendly option for small rooms or home office/guest room combos. Twin XL (39" x 80") air mattresses have the same width as a standard twin air mattress, but they have an extra 5" of length.

Full: 54" x 75"

Full air mattresses are ideal if you have a bit of extra space to work with. They ultimately offer more space for one adult to spread out and achieve restful sleep.

Queen: 60" x 80"

Queen-sized air mattresses are designed to accommodate the sleeping needs of two people. They provide enough room for each person to sleep comfortably while being a bit more space-friendly than a king-sized air mattress.

King: 76" x 80"

A king air mattress is the best size for two people if you have a spacious guest room or basement area. This size gives each person more space to sleep. California king air mattresses measure 72" x 84" – making them more narrow but also longer than a standard king air mattress.

Tip!

When shopping for an air mattress, weight capacity is another factor to consider. It's important to note that the size of the air mattress doesn't necessarily impact the mattress's weight limit. As an example, many twin-sized air mattresses can hold between 400 lbs. – 600 lbs., depending on the manufacturer/design. Tips for Choosing the Right Air Mattress Dimensions

With a size in mind, use these tips to ensure you choose the best option.

Measure the Space to Determine the Max Size

Use a tape measure to measure the length and width of the room or the open space available between furnishings. This will help you determine the maximum size of an air mattress that can fit in the space. To ensure your guests can move around the bed, there should be at least 2' of space between the air mattress and nearby obstructions.

Tip!

Using an air mattress on a camping trip or roadtrip? Make sure to measure or get the dimensions of the tent or the car/truck space – including the height – before purchasing an air mattress.

Determine the Average Number of Sleepers

If you tend to have multiple friends or family members staying the night at the same time, we recommend having multiple twin-sized air mattresses at-the-ready. This way they can have their own sleeping space even if they have to share a room or sleep in a common space. If couples frequently stay with you, you can get a queen- or king-sized air mattress (space permitting) to accommodate them.

Consider the Height (Thickness) of the Air Mattress

You also need to take the height (thickness) of an air mattress into consideration – especially if you have guests who can't get up from the floor without assistance. Raised air mattresses are tall enough that they mimic the height of a standard mattress on a bed frame. For tent or car/truck bed camping, the height of the air mattress should be thinner to accommodate the smaller space, unless you have a super spacious tent or truck bed canopy.

Tip!

An air mattress's thickness and overall size can also impact the time it takes to inflate/deflate it. For raised air mattresses or those that are queen-/king-sized, make sure they have a built-in electric pump to make the process as seamless and quick as possible.
