Your Guide to Cookie Sheet Sizes

Which size will fulfill your baking goals?

Small cookie sheet.

Cookie sheets are designed to space out cookie dough and provide an effective surface for cookies to bake on in the oven. This form of bakeware comes with the option of slightly raised or completely flat edges to ensure cookies get an even bake and are easy to transfer to a cooling rack, or right onto your plate! The size you go with ultimately determines how many cookies you can bake at a time – in addition to a variety of other important factors. Review this guide on cookie sheet sizes to ensure success the next time you want to whip up a batch of cookies.

Tips for Choosing the Right Size Cookie Sheet

Medium-size cookie sheet with cookies.

The size of a cookie sheet matters more than you'd think! Review these tips to ensure you opt for the right size dimensions:

  • Oven Width: Make sure your oven's opening and interior are larger than the cookie sheet's length and width. Usually cookie sheets fit seamlessly in standard household ovens. However, there are some exceptions. For example, commercial-size cookie sheets require a lot more oven space, since they’re baking large batches of cookies at a time. Cookie sheets for toaster ovens and other low-profile ovens need to be equally compact in size, so they’re smaller than a standard cookie sheet.

  • Batch Size: The size you choose sets your batch limitations, so it's important to choose wisely. The larger the cookie sheet, the more space for additional cookies. If you want to bake a lot of cookies in one batch, opt for larger cookie sheet sizes.

  • Spacing Requirements: Want to bake extra-large cookies on the regular? Opt for a larger cookie sheet size to make sure each cookie has enough space to bake and puff up without squishing together.

Tip!

Don’t forget when you take your hot cookie sheet out of the oven to put on an oven mitt to protect your hands!

Baking Sheet vs. Cookie Sheet Sizes: What Is the Difference?

Cookie sheets and baking sheets are very similar and often used interchangeably. The main difference between the two is their depth allowances. Cookie sheets usually have at least one flat side to make it easy to slide and transfer baked cookies onto cooling racks. A lot of baking sheets have thicker, raised sides and deeper baking trays that make them ideal for baking a range of items, from sheet cakes to casserole dishes or meats. However, there are baking sheets that allow you to achieve evenly baked cookies. Make sure the baking sheet has a shallow baking surface and short raised edges. The image above shows how a baking sheet can be used for cookies.

Cookie sheet dimensions are usually the same as baking sheets, so you can find both in the same sizes.
