Daybed Sizes

Daybeds come in twin, twin XL, full, queen, and king sizes – just like standard beds – and they're compatible with standard mattress sizes! Our guide What Are the Most Common Bed Sizes? goes over these options in more detail. In this section, we go over standard dimensions for each size daybed and where they work the best in your home.

Twin & Twin XL

Twin-size daybeds are the standard daybed size, measuring 75" L x 38" W. They are compatible with twin-size mattresses and are narrow enough that you can also use them like sofas. For this reason, twin-size daybeds are popular for small bedrooms, guest rooms, home-office-guest-room combos, and studio apartments. This daybed size is also perfect for children's rooms. If you want a slightly longer bed, there are twin XL daybeds that measure 80" L x 38" W.

Full

Full-size daybeds are approximately 75" L x 54" W and are compatible with full-size mattresses. These daybeds are still space-friendly, but they offer more sleeping room compared to standard daybeds. If you're someone who loves to sleep surrounded by pillows and still have plenty of sleeping room, this is probably the daybed for you!

Queen

Queen-size daybeds are 80" L x 60" W and are perfect for a spacious night sleep for one or a comfortable night sleep for two. This is the perfect bed size for yourself and a partner, or for guest rooms where you want to accommodate at least two people at a time. Have a den or family room? Pop in a queen-size daybed for an ultra-cozy spot to watch movies.

King

King-size daybeds offer the ultimate cozy sleeping space, measuring 80" L x 76" W. This measurement may vary depending on the manufacturer. Because of their size, king-size daybeds typically come as a daybed with a pop-up or unfoldable trundle that creates a large sleeping space. These are called twin-to-king daybeds. Twin-to-king daybeds with pop-up trundles usually come with mattresses for both the daybed and the trundle.

How to Choose a Daybed Size

Not sure which size daybed is right for you? This section walks you through everything you need to consider before deciding on a daybed size.

1. Take Room Measurements

The average daybed is between 75" and 80" long, so make sure your room has a wall that can accommodate that length. As for width, a daybed should jut out from the wall approximately 38" – 76", which is about 3' – 6'. As a good rule of thumb, allow for at least 3' of space from the edge of the daybed and the opposite wall or bedroom furniture. This will give you room to maneuver easily and leave space for accent furnishings.

Don’t forget to account for any architectural features. Because daybeds typically feature a backrest and two armrests, it’s important to measure the height of your windows to avoid obstructions. Make sure to consider any doors and door paths while you measure too.

2. Determine the Daybed's Purpose

Next, consider how you plan to use the daybed. Is it going to be a spare bed in a small home office? Or is it going to take the place of a sofa in a studio apartment, den, or guest room? In these situations, a twin-size daybed will likely be best – their narrow profile makes them easy to transition into sofas with the help of throw pillows and cushions. If you have a bit more room to spare, you might want to consider a full- or queen-size daybed. For the ultimate flexible size option, opt for a twin-to-king pop-up trundle daybed. This way, you can easily convert your daybed from a twin-to-king size whenever you need to!

3. Consider Trundle Options

Most daybeds (regardless of size) come with a twin-size trundle that tucks under and pulls out from beneath the daybed – unless another size is specified by the manufacturer. As mentioned, pop-up trundles are designed to line up with the daybed to create a king-size sleeping space. Removable trundles are usually paired with twin daybeds and can be moved to another spot in the room so each guest has their own sleeping space.

Daybeds vs. Twin Beds: What’s the Difference?

Standard daybeds are usually the same size as twin beds – 75" long and 38" wide. The only difference is that twin beds have a headboard and footboard with open sides, while daybeds have a headboard, footboard, and an enclosed side that mimics the appearance of a sofa with two armrests and a backrest. Review our What Is a Daybed? guide to learn more about daybeds and their distinguishing features.

What Size Mattress Is a Daybed?

Traditionally, standard daybeds require twin-size mattresses that are 75" L x 38" W to fit perfectly within the frame. However, the right size mattress might change depending on if you decide to go with a larger daybed size.
