Double vanities are a game changer for shared bathrooms. Complete with two sinks, additional counter space, and ample storage, these vanities provide plenty of room for multiple people to get ready at the same time. Double vanities typically take up more space than their single counterparts, so it's important to take careful measurements to make sure your bathroom can accommodate one. Below, we cover how to measure for a double vanity as well as popular double vanity sizes.

How to Measure for a Double Vanity

Measuring your bathroom can help you make sure that you're getting the correct double vanity size. If you're replacing your current vanity with one that is the same size, simply measure your existing vanity and search for one that matches the double vanity dimensions you've recorded. However, if you're starting from scratch, planning on replacing a single vanity with a double vanity, or want extra counter space with a wider double vanity, we've outlined the steps for measuring your space below.

Step 1: Measure the Width

Take a tape measure and measure the width of the available space. Consider any bathroom fixtures that might require clearance, such as a shower door that swings open or a nearby bathtub that requires 30" of space. Add an extra ½" to 1" on each side to factor in the slight overhang of the vanity top. The smallest double vanity size is often 48" wide and the widest is 84".

Step 2: Measure the Depth

Next, you'll be measuring the amount of usable space you'll have to work with. Start from the wall and measure outward into the open space. As a rule of thumb, try to leave at least 30" of open floor space so that you can walk comfortably past the vanity. You should also take the depth of the drawers and cabinets into account, making sure that you'll have enough space to extend the drawers and open any cabinet doors. Most double vanities range from 17" – 24" deep.

Step 3: Measure the Height

To measure the height of your double vanity, measure from the floor up. Consider the height of existing fixtures, like electrical outlets or bathroom sink faucets. Most double vanities have a height of 30" – 36".
