Your Guide to Table Tennis Dimensions
Your go-to table tennis size guide.
Playing table tennis is an amazing way to stay active from the comfort of your own home. Whether you're training for the Olympics or eager to enjoy some casual fun with the whole family, it's important to consider table tennis dimensions before you buy. In this guide, learn about all the table tennis sizes available as well as how to measure your space for a table tennis table.
Standard Table Tennis Dimensions
Regulation: According to official table tennis regulations, a regulation-size table tennis table (intended for professional, tournament-grade play) must be 9ʹ L x 5ʹ W x 2.5ʹ H. When affixed properly, a standard table tennis net extends 6" on either side of the table, making the table's total width 6' at the center.
Regulation table tennis tables don't have an official thickness, but tournaments typically use tables that are 20–25 mm thick. The rules are fairly lenient with table thickness and material – as long as a table tennis ball can reach a bounce height of 9" when dropped on the table from 1ʹ high, it's good to go.
Small: While regulation-size table tennis tables are a perfectly fine choice for recreational use, there are smaller tables available that are just as functional. Small table tennis tables can vary from over 5' to just under 9' in length and 3' – 5' in width. Smaller tables tend to have narrower nets that extend only a few inches over the sides of the table, if at all.
These tables are usually the same height as regulation tables. Their tabletops tend to be a few millimeters thinner. If your space is limited, browse smaller table tennis tables instead.
Mini: Perfect for casual play in smaller spaces, mini table tennis tables are the smallest table tennis tables available. They typically measure 6' L x 3' W. Many mini table tennis tables are regulation height (2.5'), but some are a few inches shorter to accommodate younger, shorter players.
Because many are made with kids in mind, mini table tennis tables tend to be super durable and portable and can be used both indoors and outdoors. If you're looking for an engaging game to keep kids active, consider a mini table tennis table.
Table Tennis Space Requirements
Before you buy a table tennis table, it is essential to measure the length and width of your space so you can be sure you have enough space for comfortable play.
Professional table tennis tournaments may take place in large, wide-open spaces that can be up to 46' L x 23ʹ W, but rest assured: You do not need that much space to enjoy a perfectly comfortable game of table tennis in your home. Recreational table tennis games can comfortably take place in spaces that are 2.5' – 3' wider than the table on both sides and 4' – 5' longer than the table on each end. For reference, this means that the minimum recommended space for a regulation table is 11' L x 17' W.
Room height matters less – unless you anticipate taking lots of fully extended overhand shots, a low ceiling won't add too much discomfort. Be aware of hanging ceiling fixtures (lights, fans, etc.) that might be in the way.
Of course, the larger the room, the more comfortable the play; with more space on all sides, players will have more room to move around. This also minimizes the likelihood of balls ricocheting wildly off the ceiling or walls or players accidentally damaging the ceiling or walls during play.
Finally, don't forget to measure your doorways and stairwells to ensure the table you choose will be able to make it through after delivery. If your doorways or stairwells are particularly narrow, many table tennis tables are foldable to allow for easier transport.
