Seating Arrangements

The seating layout you choose has an impact on the amount of guests you can accommodate within a tent space, so it's an important consideration when choosing a size for a tent. Traditional sit-down arrangements include chairs around round- or square/rectangular-style tables for dinner, drinks, and conversation. Round tables provide more flexibility because they don't have corners, making it possible to seat more people at each table. However, square/rectangular tables create distinct walking paths for servers and party guests – the best shape depends on you and your event’s priorities!

You can usually double the number of people within a tent with theater-style seating (common for wedding ceremonies and concerts). With this arrangement there aren't any tables. Instead, chairs sit closely together in even rows. For example, the same tent that allows 50 people to sit down around a traditional round or rectangular table can accommodate up to 100 people in theater-style seating arrangements. Table Size & Shape

Planning on providing a sit-down dining experience? Table sizes and shapes can have a dramatic impact on what tent size you need. When in doubt, opt for round tables because they help cut corners (literally!), providing more space than square or rectangular tables. They can also fit more chairs around them in a pinch. Long rectangular tables that stretch the length of the tent are also a smart option. Make sure to pick out the size and shape of your event tables before you go tent shopping. Then compare the size, shape, and number of tables to the total square footage of a tent to determine the best size match.

Buffet & Bar

Food is a top priority at most events! If you don't plan to provide a separate cook or prep space for caterers, you'll need to map out a spot within the tent for a buffet line and food display. We recommend determining the length and width of the buffet table as well as the clearance room required around the table for caterers and guests, and factoring that into your total tent size. If you plan to provide a bar area, you'll also need to consider this in the tent plans and how this addition could impact space needs.

DJ Booth/Band & Dance Floor

A dance floor and DJ/band help set the tone for weddings and birthday celebrations, but they do need to be factored into your tent-size considerations. You can go big with a temporary dance floor that covers half of the tent, or keep things small with just enough room for a first dance. We recommend allowing 8 to 10 sq. ft. per guest in tents with theater-style seating or casual cocktail settings. Allow 10 to 12 sq. ft. per guest for banquets and traditional sit-down seating arrangements. Add an additional 100 to 200 sq. ft. or more to your total to estimate space for each additional component (dance floor, bar, buffet table, DJ/band setup). When in doubt, always size up! It's better to have more room than you actually need to provide optimal spacing between tables, chair rows, and other event must-haves. Your guests will be thankful for the extra room, too.

Small Party Tents

Small party tents can typically hold 50 or fewer guests, so they’re perfect for small celebrations or wedding ceremonies outdoors. Review the options below for an estimate on how layouts influence the number of guests each tent size can hold.
