Mirror, mirror, on the wall…

Wall mirrors come in all shapes and sizes – but it can be confusing to determine how big or small a mirror should be when styling it. In this article, we’ll go over common mirror sizes and tips for finding the perfect mirror to dress up your walls.

1. Choose a Location

Oftentimes, a wall mirror’s location will dictate its size. When in doubt, choose a mirror that is 25% – 50% smaller than the furniture fixture underneath it. Here are some common places for mirrors and how you can determine the ideal size:

  • Bathroom: The bathroom wall mirror (or mirrors) should not be wider than the vanity. Ideally, aim for 2" – 4" of space between the mirror and the edge of the vanity.

  • Entryway: A mirror that’s two-thirds to three-quarters the width of your console table or bench will create a balanced look.

  • Living Room: When hanging a mirror over a sofa or fireplace mantel, aim for a size that is 25% – 50% narrower than the furniture below it. If your sofa is 84" long, then the mirror above it should measure between 42" and 63" long when hung horizontally.

  • Bedroom: To hang a mirror above your headboard, choose one that is two-thirds to three-quarters the width of your bed. Depending on the size of your bed, this can range from 25" – 60" in length.

2. Pick a Mirror Type

Mirror type and desired functionality are other determining factors when choosing a mirror size. Here are some popular mirrors to consider for your home:

  • Full-Length: A full-length wall mirror displays your head-to-toe reflection. For maximum functionality, a full-length mirror should be at least half your height – if you are 64" tall, the full-length mirror should be at least 32" long to show your full reflection.

  • Vanity: Vanity mirrors are typically small-to-medium in size, depending on your vanity’s dimensions. Don’t forget – the mirror width should not exceed that of the vanity.
For optimal use, the height of the mirror should extend 5" – 10" above eye level of the tallest person in your household.

3. Decide on the Right Size

After picking a mirror location and type, choose the perfect mirror size to achieve your desired look. Be sure to measure your current furniture to find the ideal mirror to match. Here are the size categories to consider:

  • Small: Small mirrors are under 20" and work well as decorative accents on gallery walls or as functional pieces in compact areas, like powder rooms or small entryways.

  • Medium: These mirrors range between 20" – 40" and serve as visual focal points in entryways, bedrooms, and living rooms with shorter walls.

  • Large: Large mirrors are 40" – 60" in length, making them perfect for homes with tall ceilings. These selections are ideal for dressing up spaces with big pieces of furniture – hang them over king-size beds or sectional sofas.

Oversized: An oversized mirror is anything over 60". Oversized mirrors are most common in large spaces because they create a dramatic visual effect and take up wall space.
