Cleaning 101: How to Clean a Teapot

It only takes five steps!

Flower Teapot

If you are a tea lover, then your teapot probably gets plenty of use. Make sure you give it as much love as it gives you – by cleaning it! Learn how to clean a teapot with our guide, so your teapot can shine like new.

Teapot or Tea Kettle?

As similar as they may look, teapots and tea kettles are not the same. A tea kettle is specifically designed to boil water. Teapots are not meant for boiling water, but for holding a steady temperature, which is why they are perfect for steeping tea. They are commonly made from porcelain or ceramic and are not intended for stove top use. After boiling water in a tea kettle, transfer the water and any tea leaves to the teapot so that the tea can steep.

Tip!

Always let your teapot cool completely before cleaning.

How to Wash Your Teapot

Before washing, check the box to see if there are specific cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Dishwasher Safe: If the manufacturer’s instructions state your teapot is dishwasher safe, place your teapot face down in the rack with the lid removed. Make sure it does not bump against other items. Proceed to run your dishwasher.

Hand-Wash Only: Using a sponge, wash your teapot gently with warm, soapy water. To clean inside the pouring spout, use a soapy cotton swab for the best reach.

Water Only: If your teapot is cast iron, simply rinse it with warm water and wipe the insides with a clean tea towel. Do not use dish soap or a harsh scrubber. Place your teapot upside down and let it air dry.

How to Remove Tea Stains

Removing hardened tea stains from your teapot only takes five quick steps.

What You Will Need

Denture cleaning tablets

Step 1: Place your teapot in the sink. Meanwhile, fill your tea kettle completely with water and bring it to a boil.

Step 2: Once the water is boiled, pour it into the teapot, adding a little more so the pot overflows slightly. Drop in two denture cleaning tablets. The water will begin to fizz.

Step 3: Place the lid on to the slightly overflowing teapot, so that even the edges of the lid will be cleared of any stains.

Step 4:Let this sit for 30 minutes.

Step 5: Rinse your teapot a few times with warm water. The inside of your teapot should look like new!

How to Remove Rust

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush the areas that have rusted. Then add boiling water to the teapot with already-steeped tea bags. The tannic acid in the tea will work to erase and prevent any future instances of rust.

Tip!

Many tea enthusiasts find that a rusted teapot actually adds a lot to the flavor (and it's perfectly harmless).
