How to Maximize Space With These Bedroom Storage Ideas

Make your limited bedroom space work for you!

Bedroom Organization Ideas Hero

Bedrooms are prime real estate in a home, and this is never more true than in the master bedroom, a space that is typically shared by two people. When designing a master bedroom, it is advisable not to clutter the room with lots of pieces of unnecessary furniture. If you need to store lots of clothes and other items, there are creative ways to get the storage you need without crowding the space or making it feel cramped.

Thankfully, most homes that are being built today come with a generously sized master closet! However, sometimes the closet doesn’t provide quite enough space to store all the things the homeowner needs on a daily basis.
So we will be sharing with you some creative ways you can add storage to your bedroom while also creating interesting design elements and focal points for your room.
The first thing to consider is how to make the storage element look purposeful, because if you can do this, then it will instantly elevate your room into a space that looks and feels well designed.

These days, many people really want to have a space that feels light and airy with just the essentials needed to live a well-balanced life.
To achieve that, built-ins and surrounds are an absolute go-to tool for adding storage and architectural interest to space.

Here are two examples of surrounds that our sample homeowners used.

The Window Surround

This sample homeowner’s bedroom was pretty generic. It was a well-sized room shaped like a perfect square, and because of that it was just a bit boring. These homeowners wanted to redesign their master bedroom for more storage and most especially to support their busy lifestyle. They were going for a feel of sanctuary, an oasis, and a place to escape from their busy day-to-day activities.

To achieve that, they added a built-in cabinet around their bedroom window. This cabinet gave them additional storage for things like throw pillows, blankets, and electronic devices, but it also created a valet area.

The window surround also created a cozy reading nook where they could enjoy morning coffee and an afternoon glass of wine.

The design of the cabinets were in line with the more traditional-leaning elements in their home, and they made sure to pay attention to the little details by adding lighting to the reading nook area and valet hooks in the upper cabinets. When the doors of the valet cabinet open, the light automatically turns on, and in each drawer there is a USB charger that allows them to charge their devices like their phones, iPads, and Apple watches.

The Headboard Surround

Our next sample homeowners took a bit of a minimalistic approach, but the results are no less impactful for this master bedroom. Their bedroom space, like our previous homeowners, was a perfectly square box with no real architectural details or interest.

They wanted to create additional storage without making the space feel cramped. The goal is to make the room feel bigger when all the furniture comes together. To achieve this, these homeowners opted for cabinet built-ins. These built-ins have openings on each side so that the homeowners can simply reach into the opening to get their phone, journal, or tablet from the front of the bed. These cabinets provide lots of storage for extra bedding, towels, and even off-season clothes, and they create an anchor point for the room.

Adding storage to a bedroom can enhance not only your quality of life, but it can also make the room much more functional and much more interesting from a visual perspective.
