How to Store Purses in 4 Easy Steps

Make organizing purses quick and simple with these four steps.

Step 1: Declutter

Get rid of any handbags you don’t wear anymore. Gift them to friends/family or donate them to a local shelter. Trimming down your collection will reduce clutter and create space for any new handbags you may buy. This will also help you choose the appropriate storage you need. But more on that later.

Step 2: Clean

When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your bags? Look through your bags and don't forget to check the inner pockets! Throw away anything you don’t need like old receipts and empty sanitizer bottles. Put away anything you still want to keep like extra hair ties and bobby pins.

Step 3: Group Like Items

Gather purses that have similar storage needs and group them together. Bags with durable straps and shapeless forms should be stored together. Bags without handles and a more structured frame should be grouped together. Put acrylic bags in their own group. Handbags that need extra protection should be placed in the last group. Keep in mind that you may want to put your frequently used purses in an entirely different group so that they can be put in an easily accessed spot.

Step 4: Store

All bags should be stored right side up. Tote bags and empty backpacks can be stored on hooks to prevent creases from being folded. Wallets and clutches should be stored in cloth bins for protection and easy access. Acrylic handbags should be stored in a cloth bag to prevent scratches. Designer, sentimental, and vintage purses should be stuffed with inflatable inserts or non-inked paper to retain their original form, then covered with a dust bag, and finally put in a place where it won’t be disturbed by other items like a shelf or cubby. Place each group in the necessary storage. You may need more than one type of storage solution to accommodate different types of purses. Keep reading for extra handbag storage ideas!

1. Over-the-Door Organizer

An over-the-door organizer is great for organizing purses. Its biggest draw is that it makes everything easy. Installation can be done in under a minute: Simply hang it over the door and it's installed. This is an easy way to store handbags as well. Since you’re meant to place purses on the hooks by their handles, over-the-door organizers are great for those who don’t like to put too much time or effort into organizing things. And lastly, it makes it easy to remember what purses you have. Since doors are super accessible, using an over-the-door organizer to organize purses will allow you to see your purses more often which can lead to you not forgetting what handbags you have.

2. Hanging Organizer

For those who like the idea of organizing purses by hanging them but don’t want to hang them on a door, a hanging organizer is a great idea. Hanging organizers are cloth organizers with dividers that commonly hang in closets. Some have plastic compartments like the one above but others come with firm dividers to ensure separation. Unlike over-the-door organizers, hanging organizers give you more freedom as to where you can hang them. Closets, clothing racks, and wall hooks are all great options for hanging this purse organizer. Got a cramped closet? No problem! Because hanging organizers are typically made of cloth, they offer flexible placement.

3. Shelf Dividers

Learning how to store handbags on shelves seems tricky – they’re narrow open spaces that usually get filled with bins or baskets. But using bins and baskets as handbag storage ideas won't allow you to see your purses at a glance. And if your shelf is high up, you may have trouble reaching above a bin to get to your handbags. Instead, try shelf dividers. They’re thin, easy to set up, and are either clear or wired to allow you to see your entire collection easily. Shelf dividers also allow for flexible arrangement so that you can customize each slot to the size you need. From wallets to beach bags, shelf dividers can accommodate all!

4. Garment Bags

Sometimes organizing purses involves figuring out how to store handbags in different ways. Handbags that have special needs require special care. Vintage purses need to be protected from the elements to prevent further wear and tear. Designer bags should be kept in bags that prevent dust collection. If you have specific qualifications that need to be met when deciding how to store purses, it can be difficult to find exactly what you’re looking for. The one thing that offers ultimate protection is a purse garment bag. Just like garment bags for clothing, purse garment bags are water-resistant and dustproof and will keep your purse clean from the stains of the outside world like color bleeding, food, and drinks.

5. Drawer Organizer

Organizing purses to fit inside of drawers isn't the most common way to do it, but that doesn’t mean it isn't effective. Try using a drawer organizer to store your purses. Drawer organizers can be super customizable, as some come in sets with various shapes and sizes. Or keep it simple with a couple drawer organizers of the same size. Just be sure that your handbags will fit into your drawer and that you won't struggle to open and close it. Forcing handbags that don’t fit comfortably into a drawer may cause damage when putting them in and taking them out.

6. Hangers

Did you know that there are hangers designed for organizing purses? Like the ones pictured above, purse hangers are similar to clothing hangers. At one end, they have a hook to hang from any kind of horizontally hanging rod and at the opposite end, they have another hook that is designed to hold the strap of your handbag. It is truly genius. Purse hangers can be used in closets, on clothing racks, on coat hooks, and more. With purse hangers, you could hang two straps of one bag on separate hangers. This will allow you to preserve the shape of certain bags or allow you to look inside of your bags easily.

7. Garment Rack

If you’re looking to get an idea of how to organize handbags in a way that shows them off, try using a garment rack. Garment racks are racks that are designed to hold various wardrobe items from dresses to purses – they’re like closets without walls. With a garment rack, it’s easy to turn your closet into what feels like an in-store shopping experience. Pair a garment rack with purse hangers and you can make the entire rack into a handbag heaven. Or use a rack like the one pictured above for a mix of both clothing and purse storage.

8. Shelving Unit

Sometimes the answer to how to organize purses doesn't require any fancy gadget. Sometimes the best way to organize purses is to go with the most straightforward idea. A shelving unit is basic and can be used for nearly anything. Use a shelving unit to store your handbags in the corner of your closet or place it up against a wall to display them. And if you’ve got extra space left over, use that space for items you need to grab before heading out the door like shoes or sunglasses.

9. Luggage

Handbags can be a seasonal accessory. But those who live in places with extreme changes of season won’t always need to have seasonal items in their wardrobe. This concept applies to handbags. If you find yourself wearing certain bags in warmer weather and other bags in colder weather, you might be wondering how to store purses away for a longer period of time. Luggage is perfect for just this! Got an old suitcase that hasn’t been used in years? Store your winter bags in there to give your summer bags room to shine. Storing purses in luggage is better than storing purses in boxes because the inside is covered with cloth and the wheels make them easy to roll when you switch bags for the upcoming season.
