Tips for Organizing Kids' Bedrooms
Organize like a pro!
Kids rooms often feel impossible to keep tidy and ordered, but there are many ways to make their bedroom free of clutter and completely functional. In this guide, we will discuss how to choose the right storage solutions to keep toys organized and how to place furniture for optimal floor space to make a kid-friendly place where they can be creative and play without being cramped. This kids room transformation takes you through each of the steps.
This room started as a blank canvas in need of a new coat of paint as well as a flooring update. After our sample homeowners painted the walls and refinished the floors, it was time to turn this space into a cozy, fun kids bedroom.
Cost Breakdown
Here is an approximate cost breakdown for this project:
- Paint: $100
- Bed: $200
- Storage Bins: $100
- Closet Makeover: $125
- Total: $525
Utilize the Closet
Closets are an extremely vital part of any bedroom because they offer hidden storage space. This closet was completely rebuilt and sheet rocked before being fitted with a hanging rod and shelves.
In the new closet, the homeowners opted to use the lower shelf as a train table, utilizing the area beneath the hanging clothes. This in turn freed up valuable floor space that would otherwise have been taken up by the bulky toy setup.
Choose the Right Furniture
When working with a small kids bedroom, it’s very important to choose the correct furniture. Selecting a twin-size bed for a kid’s room will leave you with the most floor space. The bed frame is just as important, and choosing one with storage will take away your need for additional furniture. Loft beds provide kids with drawers and storage underneath – and sometimes even a little play area – for toys, eliminating the need for a toy box.
A captain’s bed also provides built-in drawers, allowing you to skip the dresser altogether if need be. Both of these options provide useful kids room organization without utilizing extra floor space. Deciding which type of bed you want depends on what you have the greatest need for.
If the closet is small, you might prefer extra storage for clothes. Take into consideration everything the kids bedroom needs and select the best organization ideas and storage containers. See the example below.
The dresser you purchase will depend on your available floor space. If the room is lacking wall space, a chest of drawers might be the best option. If you have a larger area to work with, you can use a wide dresser for both clothing and toy storage.
Once you’ve picked your furniture, it’s time to determine the layout. Start with the bed. It’s the largest piece of furniture in the room, and making sure it fits is a top priority. Typically in a smaller bedroom, the bed should be placed against the wall and in a corner. This is also great if your little ones are younger, because the wall acts as a barrier on one side. Once you have placed your bed in the best location, evaluate what wall and floor space you have left and determine what style of dresser and/or toy storage is best for the bedroom.
If you plan to order new furniture and you will want to map out where you will place it when it arrives. One of the best ways to determine the ideal the layout is to use painter’s tape on the floor to mark where the furniture will go.
Find a Place for Everything
Once you’ve picked your furniture and determined the layout, it’s time to organize toys, clothing, art supplies, or anything else that needs a little order. Maintaining a clean and organized room is key to allowing kids to be imaginative and enjoy all their toys. To accomplish this, it’s important to find a place for everything. The easiest/most affordable way to do this is with storage bins and baskets. Each bin can be labeled (pictures can be used for kids who can’t read yet) so that they know exactly where each of their toys go. If there is a pile of small toys in the corner because there’s nowhere to put them, they will constantly end up scattered on the floor. If there are larger toys to consider, perhaps add shelves to a closet or larger cloth bins that can easily be moved around.
Keep Things Accessible for Kids
While organizing, it’s important to make sure things are easily accessible for kids. They can only use what they can reach. On the other hand, use high storage for things only you need access to. For example, these homeowners kept two bins at the top of the closet for out of season clothing and items that needed to be donated. A cubby is another ideal piece of storage furniture that will work well in a playroom.
As long as the storage solutions are present, you will have a much better chance of keeping clutter at bay and your kids bedroom well organized.
