Create a Meditation Space on a Budget
Dreaming of a dedicated meditation space? Here’s how to create one on a budget.
Life can get a little busy at times, causing you to forget to stop and take a moment for yourself. Sometimes all you need is a spot to curl up and bliss out from the world. Creating your own meditation area is the perfect way to pause and center yourself. Finding a dedicated space in which to create a little Zen isn’t as difficult as you might think. Here are a few must-haves for creating a serene and tranquil meditation space in your own home. Whether you add a quiet zone or a clutter-free corner to an existing room like a bedroom or home office, or dedicate an entire room to recharging, these meditation room ideas can help you peace out whenever you want.
Things to Consider When Designing a Meditation Space.
Meditation areas, by definition, are meant to be personal and create an optimal environment for reflection, relaxation, and disconnection from the business in the world. Before building your quiet corner, you’ll want to take a few moments to think about what personal touches you need to create a relaxing space. Ask yourself the following questions.
- What is the main purpose of your Zen corner? To escape? To meditate? To read? Define the purpose of your meditation space and allow the design and decor elements to flow from here.
- How do you want this corner to make you feel? Energized? Calm? Spiritual?
- How do you want to feel physically in this space? Warm? Cool?
- What movements or relaxing activities do you want to incorporate? Reading? Music? Yoga?
Elements to Add to Your Meditation Space.
Include an Anchoring Decor Piece.
No matter what the purpose of your meditation area is, you’ll want to add in an area rug – especially if you are carving your space out of a corner of an existing room. A separate rug can define the area nicely and act as a great visual cue that the space is separate and designed for soothing, personal moments.
Alternatively, depending on how much space you have, you may want to invest in a statement armchair or chaise lounge. Pick something with a deep seat so that you can curl up and relax with a book or journal.
Bring in Softness With Textiles.
Meditation spaces are great for reading, journaling, or even doing some light stretching or floor work on a yoga mat. This is why it’s a great idea to have a spot to stash soft and plush textiles like throw pillows, poufs, cushions, and blankets. It’s always comfier to sit on the floor with a nice pillow to prop you up. You can never have too many relaxing elements in your quiet corner!
Some people like to be quiet in the early mornings, while others look for some peaceful refuge at the end of the day. The time of day you plan to use your meditation space will dictate the type of lighting you’ll want to add. Your light sources can vary from a string of simple twinkle lights to a small table lamp to give a nice, warm glow. Natural light streaming in from a big window is another perfect light source.
Calming the mind is all about creating a soothing and tranquil environment. To do that, consider investing in pieces that pique all your senses and allow you to fast-track your way to peace. Aromatherapy is a go-to when it comes to meditation. Diffusers and essential oils can bring soothing smells into your corner of bliss, while scented candles add light and a focal point for meditation practices. Consider bluetooth headphones or a small speaker if you plan play calming music.
The final element you’ll want to consider for your quiet space is nature. Connecting to natural elements (even if it’s just in one small corner of your home or office) can be restorative and mood enhancing. If you’re in a super small space, consider hanging planters to add little greenery. If you have a bit more floor space, a colorful plant stand near a window will bring the outdoors in while adding texture and life.
