What Are Standard Dresser Dimensions?

dresser size chart with standard dresser dimensions like height, width, and depth

A standard dresser ranges from 30" – 50" tall, 35" – 58" wide, and 18" – 24" deep. A standard dresser typically has anywhere between six and nine drawers. Double dressers typically have larger, wider drawers and thus more storage space than standard dressers. Dresser drawers are typically 16" – 18" deep, while other dressers feature extra-deep drawers for additional storage space.

If you’re looking for a dresser that will fit taller items or stacks, think about getting a combination dresser that has both drawers and cabinets. The gentleman’s chest is the tall version of a combination dresser and typically has one large, multi-shelved cabinet. Just keep in mind that a cabinet door will require swing clearance, so measure accordingly.

Tip!

If you're short on space, consider getting a chest. A standard chest is taller (44" – 60") and narrower (30" – 40" wide), but about as deep (16" – 20") as a standard dresser. Check out our Guide to the Different Types of Dressers & Chests to explore similar options.

Standard Dresser Drawer Dimensions

The number and size of your dresser drawers is an important factor to consider since this is where you will actually store your clothing and accessories.

How Deep Should a Dresser Drawer Be?

Most dresser drawers are 16" – 18" deep. Deeper drawers are ideal for bulkier clothing items like jeans, sweaters, and sweatshirts. Smaller items like underwear, socks, and accessories fit well in shallower drawers.

How Tall Are Dresser Drawers?

Dresser drawer height typically varies by row as some are meant to hold bulkier items, while the smaller top drawers are reserved for smaller clothing items. Here are the standard heights of dresser drawers:

  • Top Drawers: The top drawers of dressers are typically between 4" – 6" tall and are usually reserved for socks, underwear, and smaller accessories.
  • Standard Drawers: Typically located in the middle of the dresser, standard drawers usually range in height between 6" – 8". These drawers are ideal for storing everyday clothes, including t-shirts, long-sleeve tops, and leggings.
  • Bottom Drawers: The largest drawers are typically at the bottom of the dresser and range in height from 8" – 12". This is the best place to store bulkier items, such as jeans, sweaters, and sweatshirts.

How to Measure for the Perfect Dresser Size

So, which size dresser is right for your space? If you have a dresser you're looking to replace, we recommend measuring the depth, width, and height of the existing dresser to determine the best dimensions for a replacement dresser. To measure a spot that doesn't already have a dresser, keep reading.

1. Determine the Best Spot

Before you can start measuring, you’ll need to scope out the best location for your dresser. Try to find a place that’s easily accessible and doesn’t obstruct any walkways. We recommend having 36" of clearance between the front of your dresser and your bed or other piece of furniture to allow you to easily open and close drawers.

2. Measure for Depth

Once you’ve chosen a spot, measure the distance between the wall and the closest piece of furniture the dresser would be facing (usually a bed) and subtract 36" to get the correct dresser depth.

3. Measure for Width

To find the right width for your dresser, measure the width of the wall where you plan to put it, or measure the width of the available space between furnishings. If closet or bedroom doors are near the spot you chose for a dresser, make sure the doors have enough room to swing without hitting the dresser.

Dressers are available in four widths: narrow (less than 38"), standard (38" – 58"), wide/long (more than 58"), and extra wide (more than 64"). However, to find a dresser's specific measurements, read the "Weights & Dimensions" tab on the product page.

4. Measure for Height

Whether you want to position your dresser beneath a window or want to add a mirror or TV above it when it's placed against a wall, you need to find the right height. Measure from the floor to the window sill or floor to the ceiling to ensure the dresser (and possible mirror or TV) you choose won’t be too tall to fit.

Dressers are available in three heights: low (less than 36"), standard (36" – 50"), tall (more than 50"). However, to find a dresser's specific measurements, read the "Weights & Dimensions" tab on the product page.
