When it comes to placing an L-shaped sofa in your living room, you have a few options. Your living room size and layout will determine what makes sense for your space. We’ll cover the most common scenarios to help you decide how to arrange an L-shaped sofa in your living room.

In a Small Living Room

A corner placement is going to be your best bet when styling a small living room. In fact, L-shaped sofas are a great option for maximizing seating space in small rooms since they fit perfectly into empty corners. This placement frees up more floor space for a coffee table and to comfortably move around the seating area. Position the sofa with an ottoman facing towards your TV for relaxed lounging, while the other side of the sofa can be designated for stretching out during nap time!

L-shaped sofas are useful for constructing boundaries in open-concept layouts. If your living room is openly connected to your kitchen or dining room, we recommend placing your L-shaped sofa in between the two “rooms” to create a boundary. The back of the sofa (longer side) will face towards your kitchen or dining room, while the front of the sofa will naturally face towards your coffee table and TV. If you have another room or entryway that connects to one side of the living room area, have the open end of the sofa face towards that entrance to keep things feeling free-flowing. You can add a console table against the back of the sofa’s longer side and place decor or framed family photos facing the other room for an enhanced visual effect.

In a Narrow Living Room

The best placement for an L-shaped sofa in a narrow living room is with the longer side of the sofa placed up against the longest wall. Depending on your set up and other furniture, it might make sense to push the sofa into a corner – just make sure to align the longest sofa backing with the longest wall. If your living room is very wide, you might want to place the sofa more towards the center, and use the shorter side of the sofa as a boundary to create a separate space. Consider placing a desk and chair in this visually separated space for a home office area, a toy chest and fun area rug for a mini playroom, or a furniture-style dog crate or cat tree for a designated pet hangout.

In a Large Living Room

If you have a particularly large living room we recommend floating your sofa towards the center of the room. This allows your sofa to serve as a sort of centerpiece that will help balance out the large space. Your L-shaped sofa should be facing your focal point, which would most likely be a TV and entertainment center, fireplace, or a large piece of artwork.

You may want to create a conversational sitting area by placing another smaller sofa, or two accent chairs facing the L-shaped sofa – include a stylish area rug and coffee table in the center of this setup for a complete look. If your main sofa is facing a large entertainment center or fireplace, you can place the additional seating to the sides while still facing the L-shaped sofa so this space can be used for both entertainment and conversation as needed.
