What Makes a Product GREENGUARD Gold Certified?
For a product to be GREENGUARD gold–certified, it must release a low level of emissions. Furnishings release different levels of VOC emissions (or volatile organic compounds) depending on factors like their material and manufacturing. If these levels are too high, they can affect the quality of the air, polluting the room and creating a dangerous environment for infants and young children.
GREENGUARD Gold-certified products can emit no more than 360 VOCs, and must comply with the "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers, Version 1.1," as deemed by the State of California’s Department of Public Health. Products that meet this certification are excellent for delicate environments where safety is the priority, like nurseries.
JPMA, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, has advocated for safe baby products for over 40 years. To receive this certification, products must be sample tested at independent laboratories and meet rigorous safety standards.
These standards are based on an adherence to a combination of federal and state laws, retail requirements, CPSC (the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) requirements, and ATSM (the American Society for Testing and Materials) standards. JPMA certification differs from the GREENGUARD gold certification because it focuses on safe functionality and performance rather than VOC emission levels.
