How to Measure for a TV Stand
We share some measurements you will want to know when shopping for a TV stand.
Whether you are an avid television viewer or only use your set for an occasional movie night, you need a TV stand. Read on as we share some measurements you will want to know when shopping for a TV stand.
Measure the TV
TV stands will generally say what size TV they can hold, but you should still know the dimensions of your set to make sure it will fit.
- Measure the height, width, and depth of your TV to ensure you are buying a TV stand comparable in size to your TV. (Do not just look at the number on the TV box, because that only measures the screen size diagonally and does not include the frame.)
- Nearly all TV's being manufactured now have a 16:9 aspect ratio. We created a dimension chart based on the following sizes to help determine a recommended TV stand width. Get started below!
Aspect Ratio: Referring to the TV screen shape, it is the proportion between the width and the height of a screen.
Measure the Space
Measuring the room is an important factor to consider when looking for a TV stand. It will help narrow down styles and sizes. Think about the following:
- Take into account how you will be using the TV. If your kids will be using it for video games that require a lot of dancing and movement, choose a TV stand with a slim profile (one that does not stick out too much). If you'll just be sitting and watching and want the stand to double as extra storage space, feel free to go for a larger unit with shelves and cabinets.
- Measure the floor space you have available for a TV stand. If your TV is too large for a TV stand that will fit in your space, consider mounting it on the wall.
- Sit on the chairs and sofas in your room and determine the line of sight. The middle of the TV should meet the line of sight a person has when seated in the room. Choose a stand that will put the middle of the TV at the correct height.
