Jana Bek: Master Bath Makeover Design Plan

See what products Jana Bek has picked to complete her master bathroom makeover.

If you're just tuning in, welcome! My husband and I will be renovating our master bath in partnership with Wayfair and Kohler, and I'll be writing about the process along the way. Catch up on our initial plans and design inspiration here. This week I wanted to provide a clearer vision for the new layout and design.

Let's take another look at the space currently:

Like I do with my clients, my husband and I created a prioritized list of wants for the space before we started. Doing this makes the budgeting process and final design just that much easier.

Our top three design wants:

  • Bright and open feel
  • Enclosed space for toilet
  • incorporate current windows, doors, and fireplace for budget concerns

To improve the budget, we separated tasks that we could do ourselves from tasks requiring professionals. This, along with keeping exterior windows and doors intact, helped a lot.

Here's the new layout:

Our plan is to:

  • Tear down a wall to open up the bathroom and eliminate unused sitting space.
  • Create a larger show area to include a freestanding tub with an all glass enclosure. This idea arrived after perusing Pinterest. (I love using Pinterest to gather inspiration imagery!), and it provided that open spacious look we're after.
  • Create a privacy room with a solid door for the toilet behind the new vanity/shower area.

Tearing down the wall provides extra space, but not as much as you might expect. With the clearance of the exterior French doors, it only opens up the room by about 3 feet. Luckily, it's just enough to make the changes needed to incorporate all our top priorities for the design.

Having settled on a layout, finding inspiration imagery, and fitting everything within our construction budget, I was able to dive into choosing the "standout" pieces for our space.

Check out my mood board for the design. Mood boards are a great way to ensure all of the pieces will work together. I suggest putting them together for all of your interior design and home improvement projects.

We are after a bright, ethereal, and sophisticated look—and Kohler's Artifacts hardware fits perfectly.

I fell in love with Kohler's Jacquard vanity. The clean lines make it so versatile, and paired with the Artifacts hardware, I know the combination will be timelessly elegant.

The design process: Jana Bek looking through swatches

When selecting your vanity, Kohler has so many options for customization—from the countertops and sinks to thoughtful storage solutions. I cannot wait to install it! Our existing vanity storage was so poorly considered that it's become one large junk drawer. The Kohler tailored vanity is quite the dream come true.

Our tile samples just arrived from Wayfair and they are gorgeous: soft greys with minimal marbling, which I preferred for our larger bathroom design.

I hope you're excited about where the design is headed! Stick with us throughout the process to see more.

The renovation starts soon and we're so excited to dive in. I'm thrilled to be sharing our progress with you soon. Wish us luck!
