Blue skies and sunshine are just two of the things that come to mind when touring this cheerful bedroom designed by Ashley Rose. Of course, we’d expect nothing less from the founder and creative director behind the peppy blog Sugar & Cloth, a site with an aesthetic that's just as chipper. Rose created this space for her fiancé’s sister Caitlin (and Caitlin’s future husband) after the couple bought a new home, cheerfully quipping that “no empty room is safe” from her design ambitions. She accentuated already-present elements like natural light by doing away with dingy window treatments, updating lighting fixtures, and painting the room a light grey, then livened up the space with generous pops of blue, teal, and yellow via the décor. Our favourite part? An amazing reclaimed wood wall, which serves as the focal point of the room and stands in for a traditional headboard. Scroll on to hear more about this spirited space.
How would you describe your décor style?
Bright and modern with pops of colour.
What did you envision when creating this space?
Our first goal was to brighten it by updating the wall colour, removing old window treatments, and adding an accent wall with reclaimed wood for visual interest. The wall really helped to warm up the space and add texture.
What is your favourite piece of furniture in the room?
The mid-century white dressers. I was tempted to keep them for myself!
Where did you choose to splurge and where did you save?
The accent wall was a splurge, as well as a few pieces of investment furniture like the dressers. We saved by sticking with the wall-to-wall carpeting we had originally hoped to replace, and simply layering an area rug over it. We also split a single curtain panel into two pieces in order to get two sets out of just one pair. I also saved by painting all of the wall art myself on blank canvases I bought on sale at the craft store.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to achieve your style?
Focus on great natural lighting as well as some statement pieces you really love. Then you can work around those things.
