This shelf is exactly as pictured. The black metal is not a polished black but not rustic either. It works with my polished black piano fine and I think would work with many decor styles. It is a very substantial piece and takes up a lot of space on the wall without being heavy. I used 100lb anchors to intall so I could use a couple sections for books. Everyone compliments it so far.
