I've not used this product yet, but it appears to be quite sturdy. I can understand why the manufacturer recommends that this product be hand washed; the sheen of the steel really shows any watermarks or fingerprints. If I were to use this utensil at the table with guests (not too likely), I'd have to remember to wipe them clean (even if they are clean), so as not to show any markings.
