In five steps, make your own unique plaid art for the fall season!

One of my favourite things about the fall season is decorating my home. I love the colours, patterns, and pumpkin spice! This year I am adding a personal touch to my decorating by creating my own art that uses the bleached fabric look that you can find currently on clothing and home fabrics.

To create your own bleached fabric art you will need:

  • A canvas
  • Plaid fabric
  • Bucket
  • Gloves
  • Bleach
  • Plastic bag
  • Rubber band
  • Manual staple gun

Step 1

First, cut your fabric. To do this, measure your canvas. You will want to cut a piece of fabric that is two inches wider than your canvas on all sides. For example, if your canvas is 8x8 inches, add 2 inches to each side, giving you a 12x12-inch piece of fabric.

Step 2

Decide where you want the bleached area to begin. Wrap the part of the fabric you do not want bleached with a plastic bag and secure in place with the rubber band.

Step 3

Wearing gloves, partially fill your bucket with warm water and add some bleach. The more bleach, the faster your fabric will lighten.

Set the fabric into the bucket and set a timer. Check every 5 minutes. When you have reached your desired level of bleaching, drain the water and rinse the bucket out.

Step 4

Rinse your fabric thoroughly with warm water. Alternately, you can put it in the washing machine to make sure all of the bleach is washed out.Allow to air dry or put in the dryer. Iron if there are wrinkles after drying.

Step 5

Lie the fabric face down on a flat surface. Centre your canvas, face down as well, in the middle of your fabric. Begin with one side and wrap the fabric over to the back of the canvas. Secure in place with 3 or more staples, using the manual staple gun.

Continue wrapping and stapling all four sides. Make sure you pull the fabric so that it is tight and will not sag. Fold in each corner of the canvas and secure in place with a staple.

With just a few short steps, you're done! You have your very own bleached plaid art ready for the fall and Thanksgiving season.
