DIY Laundry Room Storage and Shelving

See how one blogger customized her laundry room with simple DIY projects.

My husband and I recently moved into our first house, and we've been hard at work with projects to get the place ship shape. One of the first places we tackled was the laundry room, which was basically a big white box with a washer and dryer in it.

It was making me crazy that there was no storage and no countertops, so we got our DIY on and made a customized laundry room to fit exactly what we needed!

Here's What You'll Need:

  • 3- Drawer cabin* Drawer base storage unit* Bamboo butcher block worktops* Drawer pulls* Saw* Sander* Water-based sealer* Drill and various hardware* Level* Shelf brackets* Leather scraps

Here's What You Do

Put together the two storage units according to their instructions, leaving off the handles and the legs. Set them directly next to each other and drill through the insides, securing together with nuts and bolts.

Sand and seal the bamboo worktops. Trim each worktop according to how long and deep you'd like both the worktop and the shelf by sawing off the excess. Sand lightly and add sealer according to the directions on the packaging.

Allow the worktops to dry. Set the one that will act as a counter on top of the cabinets. Drill up from under the top of the cabinets and into the countertop to secure it to the cabinets.

Trim your leather into faceted rectangles to act as a backing to the drawer pulls. Drill through the leather to create pilot holes and insert screws through the back of the drawer into the leather and into the drawer pulls.

For the shelf, screw your brackets into the sealed worktop. Decide where on the wall you'd like the shelf and make a light mark. Use a level to drill pilot holes in the wall corresponding to your brackets. Insert molly bolts into the holes and screw the brackets into the molly bolts.

Stand back and enjoy your handy work! We also outfitted our room with some baskets, a drying rack, and a rolling hamper—just those few little items make it so functional but still sleek and clean. Have fun, DIYers!
