Bathroom Rug Sizes 101: Sizing Tips & Considerations

Discover the ideal rug size for your bathroom.

Large bathroom with a wood double vanity, a long rectangular rug, a glass shower enclosure, and white floor and wall tiles.

The right bathroom rug prevents slippage when getting in and out of the shower and creates a soft barrier between your feet and cold tile floors. When shopping for a bathroom rug, it should be proportionate to your space and offer the right amount of floor coverage. Keep reading to find the perfect size for your bathroom.

Average Sizes for Bath Rugs & Mats

Here's a breakdown of the most common rug size option for your bathroom, including where they work the best:

Small

17" x 24"

Small bathroom rugs provide just enough floor coverage to cushion your feet as you get out of the shower or stand in front of the vanity. Because of their quaint size, they're perfect for tiny powder rooms and half-baths or when paired with pedestal sinks or narrow vanities that are 18" – 20" wide.

Standard

20" x 32" or 21" x 34"

Standard bathroom rugs fit seamlessly with 32" to 36" wide bathroom vanities and offer a bit more coverage – also great for the space beside your bathtub or shower enclosure.

Large

24" x 40" or Larger

Large bathroom rugs include a wide range of sizes. 24" x 40" is the starter size for a large bath mat/rug that fits perfectly beside a 40" wide vanity or a bathtub/shower enclosure. Larger area rugs can be used in full-bath or primary bathrooms that have a lot of floor space. Common sizes include 3' x 5', 4' x 6', or even 5' x 8' for particularly large primary bathrooms.

Runner

20" x 60" or 24" x 72"

Runner rugs are a great option for bathrooms with double vanities or narrow/long floor plans. Their length (approximately 5' – 6'), keeps the floor or the space in front of the vanity from being visually broken up by multiple bath mats, allowing for continuous coverage throughout the space.

Bathroom Rug Sizing Tips

With a better sense of available sizes, consider these tips to help choose the right rug dimensions for your bathroom:

1. Use the Vanity as a Guide

(Shop this image: geometric bath rugs, teal bathroom tiles, single bathroom vanities, and round plant stands.)

If you're unsure how to choose or measure for a bathroom rug, start by measuring the width of your bathroom vanity. This will give you a sense of what size bath rug will frame the vanity perfectly.

  • For standard single vanities, opt for a rectangular bath rug/mat that's the same length as your vanity.
  • For pedestal-style sinks with narrow bases, consider small round bath rugs/mats as they mirror the size and shape of the sink. You can measure the width of the sink itself to get an idea of the proportionate rug size.
  • For double vanities, we recommend going with a runner rug that matches the length of the vanity. You can also go with two rectangular bath rugs of the same size to define each sink area.

2. Opt for Area Rugs in Spacious Bathrooms

In full baths or large primary bathrooms, an area rug might be better than standard bath rugs/mats. They cover the floor in a solid piece so you don't have to worry about incorporating multiple bath mats.

  • We still recommend measuring the length of your bathroom vanity (or vanities) to determine the proper area rug size for your bathroom. This ensures that the rug you choose is proportionate to the space.
  • You'll also need to measure the width, starting from your bathroom vanity(s) across to the other side of the room. This will help you choose the proper area rug width for your bathroom.
  • Feel free to play around with large round or oval-shaped area rugs for a stylish look.

Tip!

Make sure you select an area rug that's designed to withstand constant water exposure. Outdoor-suitable area rugs work well for this purpose.

3. Scale Powder Room Rugs Down to Size

(Shop this image: round gray bath rugs, black bathroom vanities, and blanket ladders.)

The good thing about powder rooms, also called half-baths, is that they're usually so small that you likely only need one rug in front of the vanity or a contour rug that fits around the base of the toilet. Select a small bath rug that's proportionate to your vanity or have fun with quaint shapes and designs!

4. Incorporate Runner Rugs for Full Coverage in Narrow Bathrooms

(Shop this image: runner rugs, light wood bathroom vanities, and gray bathroom tiles.)

If you have a long, narrow bathroom, a bathroom with two bathroom vanities or a double vanity, or all of the above, then you'll likely want a runner rug in place of traditional bath rugs/mats. The good thing is that runner rugs come in a wide range of widths and lengths, so you can go with one that perfectly fits within your getting-ready space.

Bathroom rug sets take away the guesswork when it comes to choosing the right sizes and pairing multiple bath rugs together. They're specifically designed to match each other in both proportions and style! They usually come with one bath rug for the vanity, a rug or runner for the spot beside the tub or shower enclosure, and a contour/U-shaped rug (designed to fit around the curvature of the toilet base). Since bath rug sets come in a range of set sizes, you can easily incorporate them into a half-bath, full-bath, or spacious primary bathrooms.
