Measuring tips for the perfect fit.

From the hallway to the kitchen to the entryway, a runner rug is an excellent addition to your space. Their long, narrow shape makes them ideal for high-traffic walkways since they help protect the floor and add the right amount of softness underfoot. Choosing the right runner rug size can ensure that it looks proportional and polished.

How to Measure for a Runner Rug

Measuring first can help you make sure that you pick the right runner rug that best suits your space. Grab a measuring tape and get ready to record your runner rug measurements so that you can shop with ease.

1. Measure the Width

Using your measuring tape, measure the width of the desired area. Runners don't extend all the way to the wall, so plan to leave 4" to 5" of space on each side of the rug – this means you should subtract 8" to 10" from the total width of your space to find the right runner width for you. Most standard-size runners come in widths of 2', 2'6", or 3' wide.

2. Measure the Length

Next, you'll measure the length of the desired area. Similar to measuring the width, you'll want to leave about 6" of room on both ends of the runner. The most common runner lengths are 6', 8', or 10' – we suggest opting for a smaller length if your measurement is between two sizes.

If your space is extra long, you'll need to decide if you want one extra-long runner rug or multiple shorter rugs with a small gap between them.

Tip!

When measuring for a runner, take doorways and other obstructions into account. If the gap below a door is narrow, you'll need to measure this height to help you choose a pile height that is low enough to not catch on the door as it swings.
