Blender sizes are based on their capacity and measured in ounces. Choosing the right blender capacity comes down to a number of factors. For instance, what kind of ingredients are you blending? How large do your batches need to be? And finally, do you need something small that can fit in a cabinet or will a large countertop model work for you?
Here are the five most common blender sizes and what they’re best for:
Mini (Under 20 oz.): With capacities of around 8–20 oz., mini blenders are designed for single servings. Mini blenders usually offer one blending speed and are best used for easy-to-blend smoothies, powdered protein drinks, sauces, dips, and even grinding spices like onion powder. Personal blenders typically feature a separate blending jar that either houses the blades or connects to the base, while portable blenders allow you to make and take your drinks on the go, both including an attachable lid. Handheld immersion blenders allow blending directly in a bowl.
Small (20–35 oz.): Designed to feed one or two people, small blenders are great for compact kitchens. This size typically features one or two speeds, which makes it best for blending softer ingredients like fresh fruits and vegetables. Portable and personal blenders are suitable for drinks like smoothies and protein shakes, while compact countertop blenders can be used for small soup batches, condiments like pesto or guacamole, and juices.
Medium (36–50 oz.): These countertop blenders work well for two to four people, offering a good balance of size and power. They come with plastic or glass pitchers with pouring spouts and feature multiple speed settings to mix ice cream, blend milkshakes, or pulse for salsa. Compact blenders are ideal for daily drinks (smoothies and juices), soups, and condiments. Mid-size high-performance models can handle tougher tasks like crushing ice and blending frozen fruit, especially for cocktails and slushies.
Large (51–65 oz.): These higher wattage countertop blenders offer greater versatility, serving up to six people and excelling at meal prep – especially for frequent high-volume blending. They often have multiple speeds along with a pulse and crush ice setting too. Large high-performance blenders effortlessly crush ice, blend frozen foods, create frozen drinks, and make bread crumbs. Their large pitcher size is perfect for large batches of drinks and soups, which is great for avid entertainers. Additionally, the high-speed blades allow you to blend for extended periods to create your own nut butters and nut milks without overheating.
Extra-Large (66+ oz.): Countertop models of this size are well suited for frequent entertaining, meal prepping, or for large families. Blenders this size can have 10 or more speed settings and often feature smart technology, like texture and heat control, that can adjust the speed to create the perfect blend while ensuring the blender doesn't overheat. They are extremely durable and even suitable for some commercial settings.
