Standard Dishwasher Size

Standard-sized appliances fit neatly with standard-sized cabinets and make the shopping process easier. The standard dishwasher size measures 24" wide, 34"–36" tall, and 24" deep. This depth often includes the depth of the dishwasher door so that the dishwasher is nearly flush with the cabinet fronts. Most dishwashers also feature adjustable feet if you need a bit of extra height to make sure it’s the same height as your cabinets.

Built-In Dishwasher Sizes

Built-in dishwashers are the most common type of dishwasher. These dishwashers are often installed between two cabinets and beneath the countertop, so dishwasher dimensions are a key consideration. Standard built-in dishwashers measure 24" wide, 34"–36" tall, and 24" deep. If you have limited space, compact dishwashers are a great option. These compact models are 18" wide, 34"–36" tall, and 24" wide.

Portable Dishwasher Sizes

If your kitchen doesn't have space for a built-in dishwasher, portable dishwashers are an excellent alternative. These portable units plug into an outlet and use an adapter to connect to the kitchen faucet. They also feature casters or wheels so that you can easily move or store the dishwasher. This type of dishwasher is typically 18" wide, 36" tall, and 24" deep. The height includes the height of the wheels.

Countertop Dishwasher Sizes

Similar to the portable dishwashers, countertop units plug into an outlet and connect to the faucet with an easy-to-use adapter, which makes them ideal for small spaces like apartments. However, this type of dishwasher is smaller and is designed to be placed on a countertop. Most countertop units measure between 18"–22" wide, 20" deep, and 17" tall to fit neatly on top of a counter.

Additional Considerations

In addition to dishwasher dimensions, there are a few other things to keep in mind while shopping for a new dishwasher.

Capacity

Like any other kitchen appliance, it's important to choose a dishwasher that meets the needs of your household. Consider how many dishes are typically used each day and how many people live in your home. Most dishwashers hold between 12 and 14 place settings, while smaller models often fit between 6 and 10 place settings.

Placement

When determining the right dishwasher dimensions, think about where you plan on placing the dishwasher and the space around it. Make sure to account for the space needed when the dishwasher door is fully open and the racks are pulled out. Look at the handle type and factor in any additional depth. If you plan on placing the dishwasher in a corner, allow for an extra 2" of clearance between the edge of the dishwasher door and any cabinets or walls.

Installation

There are different installation considerations depending on which type of dishwasher you choose. Countertop and portable models are easy to install and connect to the kitchen faucet, while built-in dishwashers require a more in-depth installation.
