If you're replacing an existing dishwasher, measure the height, width, and depth of the one you already have. If you’re starting from scratch, you should measure the cabinet opening. You'll need measuring tape and a place to record your measurements, like a pen and paper or your smartphone, so you'll be able to reference them while shopping. It's important that you hold the measuring tape taut and start at the zero marker for the most accurate measurements.

Measure the Width: Start by measuring the cabinet opening. Run the tape measure from left to right to find the width at both the top and bottom of the cabinet opening. If the two measurements differ, take the smaller of the two.

Measure the Height: Next, measure the height of the opening. Start at the bottom of the kitchen counter and go all the way to the floor. Like the width, take measurements from the left, center, and right side of the opening and take the smallest measurement. Many dishwashers have adjustable feet so that you can make it slightly taller to fit inside the cabinet opening.

Measure the Depth: Now, measure from the back to the front of the cabinet opening. There is no standard dishwasher depth, so it’s important to check the specifications of each unit to ensure the correct fit.

Tip!

Standard-size dishwashers are most commonly 24" wide, while compact dishwashers have a common width of 18". For more information on standard dishwasher sizes, read our guide Dishwasher Sizes: How to Find the Best Dishwasher Size for Your Kitchen.

Measuring Different Types of Dishwashers

You may need to take different measurements based on the type of dishwasher that best suits your kitchen. Check out our Dishwasher Buying Guide: Dishwasher Types & Sizes for more info.

Built-In

Built-in dishwashers are placed just underneath the kitchen counter and are flush with the cabinets and/or appliances next to them. Be sure to take measurements of the depth, width, and height of the space you plan to put your dishwasher into to ensure a perfect fit.

Countertop

Countertop dishwashers sit on your counter and are typically smaller than built-in dishwashers. Measure the width and depth of your countertop to ensure that you'll have enough space to place your dishwasher on top. If you have overhead cabinets, be sure to measure the space between them and the counter to ensure your dishwasher isn't too tall for the space.

Portable

Portable dishwashers are dishwashers that you can take anywhere. Many come with wheels, which make moving them easy. Since these dishwashers hook up to your sink faucet, they need to be close enough for the hose to connect to it. Ensure that the area you plan on storing your dishwasher has enough room and that there will be a clear pathway around it when it's in use.
