Step 1: Check for Installation Considerations

The first step in preparing for new laundry room appliances is determining the best spot to install them. When deciding where to place them, you'll need to find a place in your home that has close access to water supply lines. This could be a laundry room, kitchen, or bathroom.

If you're simply replacing an existing set of appliances, it's important to check for the proper hookups like water, electric, or gas.

Washing Machine Considerations

Most washing machines require a three-prong 110V outlet and a water shut-off valve that has a metal connection within 4' of the washing machine.

Dryer Considerations

Dryers can have one of two types of fuel: electric or gas. For electric dryers, you'll need access to a three- or four-prong 220V outlet and a ventilation port. For gas dryers, you'll need a three-prong 110V outlet and a ventilation port. Make sure to check for a gas shut-off valve and a metal connection that will be located directly behind the new dryer.

Most dryers are vented, which means they are connected to vents that release hot air and steam from your dryer outside of your home. Because these vents have to lead to the exterior, you'll need to install a dryer vent if your home doesn't already have one. Luckily, dryer vent installation is typically very affordable.

Step 2: Figure Out Your Setup

Whether you're replacing your existing appliances or starting from scratch, you'll need to determine which configuration works best for your laundry room. Different washer-and-dryer combinations (like side-by-side, stackable, or placed on raised pedestals) will have different space requirements. Step 3: Measure the Installation Space

Once you've determined which way you'll position your washing machine and dryer, it's time to measure the installation space. There are no standard sizes, so it's essential to find the right washer and dryer dimensions. Follow these quick steps to learn how to measure for a washing machine or dryer:

• Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of any overhead cabinets or the ceiling (depending on which washer-and-dryer configuration you choose). If you've chosen a top-load model, you'll need to account for the height of the washing machine or dryer with the lid open.
• Measure the depth of the space, leaving at least 6" behind the appliance for the washing machine or dryer hookup and room for proper ventilation. For front-load designs, make sure to account for the space you'll need when the doors are fully open.
• Then, measure the width of the space and leave 1" of space on both sides of each appliance for extra breathing room.
