How to Choose a Rabbit Hutch

Rabbits are quickly becoming more and more popular as a choice for a house pet; they are quiet, clean, easily trained, and happy indoors or outdoors.

If you have the space to house a bunny outside, it's vital that you provide your pet with a proper hutch so they can be comfortable and healthy. Rabbits are sensitive creatures, and the wrong environment can result in an unhappy bunny—which could mean health problems down the road.

We show you what's essential to keep in mind when picking your rabbit hutch.

Keep Size in Mind

When you're browsing hutches, one of the most important considerations is size. You want to make sure your bunny (or bunnies!) will be able to move and hop freely.

A good rule for minimum sizing is 1 pound of rabbit = 1 square foot of hutch space.
If you have two or more rabbits, double this number. Remember that this is the bare minimum; ideally look for the biggest hutch you can afford. Rabbits who don't have enough space to move around can become bored or overweight, and could even get sick.

Features

There are plenty of features to keep in mind when choosing a hutch.

  • Weather Protection : Make sure your hutch shields your rabbit from heat, cold, and dampness.

  • Ventilation : The hutch must allow fresh air to get in; if hot air is trapped in the hutch, your bunny could suffocate.

  •  Flooring : Outdoor hutches must have a combination of solid and mesh flooring; the mesh is so rabbit droppings can fall through, and the solid flooring ensures that your pet does not develop sore hocks or infections from sitting on mesh all day. Wood is an ideal solid surface.

  • Levels : Bunnies can get restless in a cage, and having different levels offers them variety.

  • Hiding Places : Rabbits, like people, need their privacy from time to time (especially if you have multiple pets in the same cage). Look for a hutch that has a divided compartment for each pet so your bunny can feel secure.
