Stove Sizes: How to Choose the Right Fit for Your Kitchen
Key measurements to help you choose a stove.
Whether you're updating your kitchen or starting from scratch, it's important to choose a new stove that fits your kitchen and meets your culinary needs. A stove is a standalone appliance that features both an oven and a cooktop. While the technical term for this appliance is a range, the two are commonly used interchangeably to describe the same appliance.
Though there isn't one standard size for stoves, most styles measure 30" wide, 36" tall to be flush with the countertops, and 25" deep without including the added inches of the door handles. However, stove sizes vary by type, installation, and additional features. In this guide, we'll go over key measurements and common sizes to help you find the right stove size for your kitchen.

Stove Sizes
Like many kitchen appliances, stove sizes are determined by type. We've outlined the standard dimensions for three of the most common types of ranges – compact, freestanding, slide-in, and drop-in – for your convenience.
Freestanding Stove Dimensions
As the most popular type of range, freestanding stoves have finished sides and can stand alone, between cabinets, or at the end of a cabinet. This is a great option if you have limited floor space. Freestanding stoves measure 30" to 36" wide, 36" tall, and 25" to 27" deep. They also come in extra-wide options. We recommend leaving at least ¼" between the edge of the stove and the cabinets as well as 1" behind the stove.
Slide-In Stove Dimensions
Slide-in stoves are designed to be installed seamlessly between cabinets to create a sleek look. Unlike freestanding stoves, slide-in stoves have unfinished sides that make them less suitable as a stand-alone appliance. They typically measure 30" wide, 36" tall, and 26" to 29" deep. This type of stove can also come in extra-wide styles that can measure up to 60" wide.
Compact Stove Dimensions
Space-saving stoves can be as narrow as 20" wide to fit in small kitchens. These compact stoves measure 20" to 25" wide, 36" tall, and 25" to 27" deep. This size is ideal for small spaces like apartments, RVs, and tiny homes.
To make sure you choose the right size, it's important to measure the space you plan on installing the new stove. We recommend measuring each dimension carefully to ensure you find the best fit for your kitchen. Record the measurements so that you can easily reference each one while looking for the right size.
Height
To find the right stove size, start by measuring from the floor to the top of the counters or where the cooktop will be. Take three measurements: one from the left side, one from the middle, and one from the right. Most stoves come with adjustable feet to account for sloped or uneven floors.
Width
For the width, take one measurement from the bottom of the space, measuring from the left to the right. Then use the measuring tape the same way and take another measurement near the top of the space. If the two measurements aren't the same, use the smaller measurement. Make sure to add 1/4" to your width measurement to ensure the stove will fit smoothly in the space you measured.
Depth
Depth is an easy measurement to take. Simply measure from the back to the front of the proposed space, only measuring to the front of the cabinets. Consider how much space you'll need when the oven doors are fully open. As a rule of thumb, it's best to leave 42" – 48" between the front of the stove and any cabinets or kitchen islands.
Additional Considerations
While browsing for a new stove, there are a few additional sizing factors to keep in mind.
Oven Capacity
Oven capacity is another consideration when choosing a stove size. To find the right oven capacity for your household, a common rule is that there should be about 1 cu. ft. per person. For example, a stove with an oven capacity of 2 cu. ft. would work well if you're only cooking for one or two people. If you have a larger household or enjoy entertaining, an oven with 5 cu. ft. or more would be a better fit.
Number of Ovens
In addition to oven capacity, the number of ovens can impact the size of your stove. Think about which types of dishes you like to prepare and how often you'd use two ovens.
Double Oven: If you're an avid home chef and want to be able to prepare multiple dishes at different temperatures, a double-oven range can be a great way to make the most of your kitchen. Double-ovens ranges come in different sizes and configurations, including two small ovens stacked on top of each other like in the image above, two larger ovens positioned side-by-side, or one larger oven next to a smaller one.
Single Oven: These single-oven ranges often have more spacious ovens that can accommodate large items, such as a turkey. Single-oven ranges are also easier to install and have a more affordable price range.
Delivery
Make sure delivery goes smoothly by mapping out your chosen stove’s route to the kitchen. Measure the doorways and hallways that the stove would pass through to make sure it will fit. Try to create a path that avoids any unnecessary turns or staircases for a streamlined delivery and installation.
