Illuminate your space with a table lamp that fits just right.

When it comes to choosing the right lamp for your end table, size and proportion matter just as much as style. Unsure where to begin? This guide walks you through measuring your end table to discover the right lamp size, and then how to select the ideal lamp height and width.

1. Measure Your End Table

Before choosing a table lamp, it’s important to first measure the end table that you’re planning to place the lamp on. Grab a measuring tape, then record your table’s height and width. These dimensions directly impact what size lamp will fit best and function correctly in the space.

  • Height: Use the measuring tape to find the distance between the floor and the top of your end table – typically, end tables are 24" to 30" high.
  • Width: Measure your end table’s surface from one side to the other. The base of your lamp should be narrow enough to leave room for other decor.

2. Choose the Right Lamp Height

After measuring your end table, use its height to narrow your lamp selection. Here are a few tips to ensure you make a balanced and functional choice:

  • Use This Guideline: Your table lamp should be no more than 1.25 to 1.5 times the height of your end table. If your end table is 24" tall, look for a lamp that’s no taller than 30" to 36", measured from the base to the top of the shade.
  • Follow the Eye-Level Rule: As a rule of thumb, the bottom of your lampshade should be at eye-level when you are seated next to your end table. This placement hides the bulb (minimizes any glare) and provides enough illumination for reading, relaxing, or entertaining.
  • Browse Height Ranges: Table lamps come in a variety of heights, so it’s helpful to explore each option.

3. Match the Width to Your Tabletop

To achieve a balanced look, a table lamp’s width should also feel proportionate to the table’s surface. A base that’s too wide can overpower the table, while a base that’s too narrow may look out of place. Here are a few guidelines to consider:

  • Use the Width as a Guide: Now that you’ve measured your end table, use its width to gauge how much space your table lamp can take up. As a rule of thumb, the base of the lamp you choose should take up no more than one-third of your end table’s surface. This proportion leaves enough room for your phone, books, or a drink tray.
  • Explore Base Types: The shape and style of a lamp base determine how much space it occupies. Here are a few common base types to consider:

4. Don't Forget About the Lamp Shade

After you’ve selected the appropriate lamp height and base size, it’s time to choose a proportional lamp shade. A shade that’s too small or large can throw off the functionality and visual orientation of your lamp. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Shade Width: Your lamp shade should be narrower than the end table’s surface so it doesn’t hang over the edge of the table. For a balanced look, the shade’s width should be within about 2" of the lamp base’s height – if your lamp base is 14" tall, pick a lamp shade that’s 12" to 16" wide.
  • Shade Height: As a rule of thumb, choose a lamp shade that’s about two-thirds the height of the lamp base. This proportion achieves a visually balanced silhouette and prevents the lamp from feeling too top- or bottom-heavy. If your lamp base is 18" tall, look for a shade about 12" high.
