In short, macrame is a type of textile created through knotting techniques to create the shape and function of an item. It is similar to weaving or knitting, but at its most basic level, this inexpensive craft requires no tools (only your hands) and a mounting ring or pole to hold the macrame cord in place while you work.

How to Identify Macrame

There are many different types of macrame knots, like half knots and square knots, all varying in complexity, but it is the basic knots that are the most integral part of this craft.

  • To be considered macrame, the item needs to use at least one macrame knot.
  • Some macrame pieces use a range of macrame knots as well as other techniques like knitting or weaving.
  • For any DIYers, macrame is an inexpensive hobby that is easy to learn (especially because mistakes can easily be undone without having to unravel the entire piece).
  • For those looking for ready-made pieces, there are also plenty of macrame home decor items available to purchase too, ranging from wall accents to poufs and everything in between.

The History of Macrame

Macrame has been around for thousands of years, and thanks to its practicality and economical nature, will likely remain for many generations to come. Its history is founded in ancient Middle Eastern cultures dating as far back as the 13th century where weavers used this knotting technique to create clothing, shoes, and tapestries.

Sailors too used these knots not only for ship sailing but also as a way to pass time while traveling across the oceans. As they entered different ports, they became merchants, trading their macrame wares for other items. This in turn aided the spread of this technique throughout Europe, allowing more people to explore knotting as a hobby.

It was only during the Victorian era that the art of macrame was replaced by sewing machines after the industrial revolution (1760 – 1840) occurred. Fast forward to the '60s and '70s where knotted art made a comeback, only to lose popularity again in the '80s. Today, however, in large part thanks to social media, macrame has once again become a part of popular culture, appearing in clothing and home decor once more.
