Looking for a way to boost the style, elegance, and utility of your outdoor space? Fire pit tables are amazing pieces of outdoor furniture that are a little more refined and functional than their more rugged alternative, fire pits. In this guide, we'll introduce you to the multipurpose beauty of fire pit tables.

What Is a Fire Pit Table?

A fire pit table is simply a fire pit that doubles as a table. Think of it as the evolved version of a basic fire pit. Almost all fire pit tables have three main components: a solid or legged base, a tabletop (or broad rim), and a compartment at the center of the tabletop that holds the fire insert or pit.

Their tabletops, which are typically made of concrete and other stone materials that are designed to resist heat, are what set fire pit tables apart. These tabletops usually feature a ledge for you to rest your drinkware, dinnerware, and other non-flammable objects on.

How to Choose a Fire Pit Table

1. Decide on a Design

Fire Pit Tables: If you're not interested in creating a custom fire pit table, a pre-built option is the obvious choice. While some models may require basic setup with the included components, many fire pit tables will arrive already fully assembled, so you only need to place yours in your outdoor space.

Fire Pit Table Inserts: If you want to build a custom fire pit table, you'll need a fire pit table insert. These inserts are the fire component that is installed into a separate fire pit table housing and most utilize propane or natural gas as fuel. They are best used if you're working with a builder to design a custom fire pit table.

2. Choose a Fuel Type

It is important to select the type of fuel you want your fire pit table to use. There are three options to choose from, each with its own unique benefits.

Propane: This fire pit table is fueled by a propane tank that is hidden inside the table base. The flames are easier to control than those that are fueled by wood or charcoal. Many propane fire pit tables have dials on their sides that allow you to control the height and intensity of their flames – an excellent feature for setting different moods. To shut a gas fire off, simply turn the knob or valve to the off position. Propane fire pit tables are also considered safer than wood- or charcoal-burning options because they don't emit sparks or excessive smoke. Additionally, because propane fires don't burn solid fuel, there's little to no cleanup required in the fire compartment. You can use decorative lava rocks, faux logs, or other fillers in place of wood or charcoal.

Natural Gas: If you have a natural gas line to your home, a natural gas fire pit table is a great option. Not only is natural gas an affordable fuel, but it comes with the same benefits as propane. These fires produce minimal smoke, are spark-free, and are easy to manage via controls built into the table. Although natural gas and propane fire pit tables don't have the charming crackle of wood fires, their smooth, modern flames are magical in their own way.

Wood: If you prefer the rugged look and heartwarming crackle of a wood fire, opt for a wood-burning fire pit table. These tables operate just like traditional fire pits in that you insert the wood and ignite the fire yourself. Most wood-burning fire pit tables come with snug spark screens that fit over the fire compartment to prevent stray sparks from finding their way to the table's edge. That said, it's still important to remain vigilant while the fire is burning to ensure it doesn't get out of control. Because the fire’s size, temperature, and shape depend on the amount of wood you place in the fire pit, wood-burning fire pit tables require close monitoring and diligent maintenance. Unlike propane or natural gas fire pit tables, which can be put out with the flip of a switch or the turn of a dial, wood-burning fire pit tables require patience or dousing to be put out safely.

3. Find the Right Size

Depending on the fire pit table size, the surrounding ledge or surface can typically hold a few glasses for guests or even seat up to eight people on average. Go to the "Product Dimensions" filter and select the width, height, and length you are looking for to narrow down your search. From there, you can read How to Choose the Perfect Fire Pit Size for additional sizing info.

4. Pick Your Preferred Shape

Next, you need to decide what shape you want your fire pit table to be. The layout of your outdoor space will determine what design fits best.

Rectangular: This is the most common shape and is like a rectangular dining table with the addition of a fire pit insert in the center. A rectangular fire pit table allows for more people to gather together around the fire, especially when seated on a large patio conversation set.

Square: This is ideal for smaller gatherings as the shape is more like a bistro set and doesn't take up too much space. The symmetrical shape means it can easily fit on a patio or deck and use different types of seating, whether that be an Adirondack chair or patio conversation set.

Round: A round fire pit table allows for the most natural flow of seating and conversation. Everyone will have a spot to gather around and experience equal amounts of warmth while being able to easily join the conversation.

5. Select the Best Material

Each material has a different appearance and some can even transmit heat differently. You will need to look at your outdoor area and decide what will look best with the rest of your outdoor furniture.

Steel & Stainless Steel: These durable and lightweight materials have a modern look and can withstand the elements very well.

Cast Iron: This hardy material makes for a more rustic fire pit table that is durable and sturdy. Cast iron is also an excellent heat conductor meaning the warmth of the fire will be more evenly spread for all to enjoy.

Concrete: If you want your fire pit table to have a more industrial look, concrete is the way to go. This heavy-duty material is low-maintenance but heavy, so you want to place your table in a spot where it won't need to be moved.

Shop Concrete Fire Pits

Stone: Stone fire pit tables also offer a more rustic or farmhouse style with the masonry-like detailing having a more rugged appearance. While it doesn’t require much maintenance, the stone can crack if exposed to extreme temperature changes.

Aluminum: The popular material is lightweight and budget-friendly with a sleek aesthetic. Aluminum is also a good conductor of heat, allowing the fire pit table to transmit heat from all around.

6. Consider Fire Pit Table Features

Gas Conversion Kit: Stuck on choosing between a propane fire pit table and a natural gas fire pit table? Leave your options open by selecting an option with a gas conversion kit included. These fire pit tables come equipped as propane-burning but can be converted to natural gas using the included kit. This is optimal if you aren't sure how much you and your family will be using your fire pit table and don't yet want to connect it to your natural gas line.

Spark Screen: With a wood-burning fire pit table, a spark screen is an absolute must to ensure its safety and longevity. These screens fit over the fire compartment and prevent stray sparks from landing on the surface. To avoid having to purchase a spark screen separately, shop for fire pit tables with spark screens included.

Portable: These fire pit tables make it easy to transport your fire pit to different areas around your deck or patio. Complete with 360-degree rotating wheels, you don’t have to worry about trying to move your fire pit table out of the way or strain to move it closer to the action.

Hidden Fuel Tank: Let's face it – gas fuel tanks are pretty unsightly, especially on central pieces of outdoor furniture like fire pit tables. If you'd rather not see your propane fire pit table's fuel tank, opt for a model with a hidden fuel tank. Out of sight, out of mind.
