Most apartments have limited square footage and while you want to make the most of your space, you don’t want it to feel cramped. Though standard sofas are between 71" – 86" in length, you may want to consider something smaller if space is tight. Small sofas are under 70" long and can comfortably sit two people – making them an ideal seating choice for apartment living rooms. Additionally, designs with a low-profile silhouette or unobtrusive arms can also help make a small living room feel more spacious.
If you have a larger apartment and want to provide more seating options, sofas also come in long and extra-long sizes. Keep in mind that larger furniture fixtures can be heavy and difficult to move when it comes time to relocate – especially if you live in an apartment on an upper floor or in a building with narrow stairwells.

When deciding on a sofa for your apartment, you may also want to consider the layout and function of it to maximize your living space. Here are some additional options to keep in mind.
Sectionals: Sectionals are typically larger furniture fixtures, but they provide ample seating options and space to stretch out. For apartment living areas, look for a small sectional that is less than 89" in length. Some sectional sofas come with a reversible orientation feature that allows you to customize your seating to fit your apartment layout – perfect if you move frequently and want adaptable furniture.
Futons: Not only do futons offer space-efficient and comfortable seating in your living room, but they also function as temporary sleeping options for visitors. This is a useful feature for apartments that may lack the space for a separate guest room. If you are outfitting a small living room, consider a futon that is less than 69" in length.
Daybeds: Daybeds are typically the same size as a twin bed (75" long by 38" wide) and, like futons, can double as seating and sleeping options in a small apartment. Because of the width of daybed mattresses, they offer deep seats when used in place of a sofa.
