Keeping yourself up-to-date on home lingo is a great way to boost your confidence, whether you're in the process of buying a house, looking for a rental apartment, or considering a home renovation. So, What Is an En-Suite?

An en-suite, also called an ensuite, is a bathroom that's attached to a bedroom. You can only access the bathroom by entering the bedroom first. You cannot access the bathroom from a hallway like you would a normal bathroom. Some en-suite bathrooms have more than one entrypoint, but this is usually just from another bedroom (a shared en-suite). You might come across the term "en-suite bedroom" in some cases, but this term means the same thing: it comes with an attached bathroom. En-suite bathrooms are usually paired with a home's main bedroom as an added amenity and buying incentive.

What Does En-Suite Mean?

In French, en-suite translates to "next", "later", "following", "then", or "afterward", so it makes sense that this term is used in home design to mean a bathroom directly "after" (connected to) a bedroom.

Now that we've answered, "what is an en-suite?", let's do a deep-dive into the amenities they typically include. To put it simply, an en-suite bathroom can be half bath or full bath. Half baths usually have a toilet and bathroom vanity (like a powder room), while full baths have a toilet, vanity, and a shower, tub, or both. If you see that a home or apartment has an "en-suite bathroom," you'll want to confirm if it's half-bath or full-bath with the agent or landlord. There are so many benefits to having an en-suite bathroom. We've highlighted them below so you can decide if an en-suite is right for you.

  1. Makes your daily life easier: In general, an en-suite bathroom is a time-saver, especially if you're currently sharing a bathroom. You no longer have to stress about whether the shower will be free, or if you'll have enough time to do your skincare routine. Even the short walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night seems less daunting! All of these small conveniences really add up and contribute to the quality of your daily life.
  2. Gives guests more privacy: An en-suite is a great addition to a guest bedroom as it gives your guests a place to spread out their toiletries, allows them to take their time getting ready, and helps them feel more comfortable because they don't need to walk down the hall to access the shower. Not to mention, you don't have to worry about sprucing up your own bathroom ahead of their visit.
  3. Helps contain germs & illness: There's nothing worse than when someone in your household comes down with a cold or stomach bug and you share a bathroom. En-suite bathrooms help keep everyone's germs separate by limiting instances of shared toothpaste or touching germ-covered surfaces. The sick person in question also has quick and easy access to a bathroom whenever they need it before they crawl back into bed.
  4. Increases the value of your home: En-suite bathrooms are a hot commodity that home buyers and renters look for. By adding an en-suite bathroom to your home, you can increase the monetary value of your home whether you plan to rent, sell, or refinance.

En-Suite Bathroom vs. Private Bathroom

The difference between an en-suite bathroom and a private bathroom comes down to placement. En-suite bathrooms are attached to one or more bedrooms and can only be reached through the bedrooms. They are designed to be used specifically by the occupants of the adjoining room(s). In contrast, private bathrooms are usually located outside of the bedroom with a hallway entrypoint. Private bathrooms offer the same amenities as en-suites, just without the convenience of an attached bedroom. However, private bathrooms offer more flexibility because any occupant can access them without having to walk through your room. When it comes down to it, the difference is all about convenience!
