Before taking measurements for new shutters, decide whether they’ll serve a decorative or functional purpose. Decorative shutters are designed to enhance curb appeal and don’t need to perfectly fit your window frame. On the other hand, functional shutters require precise measurements to ensure they provide protection and properly close.

How to Measure for Decorative Shutters
To create a balanced decorative shutter look, simply use a tape measure to find your window’s height and width.
Step 1: Determine Width
When selecting decorative shutters, the goal is simply keeping them visually proportional to your window rather than perfectly fitted. A good rule of thumb is choosing shutters that are about 25% to 33% of your window’s total width. This range creates a balanced look that doesn’t overwhelm the frame.

Step 2: Determine Height
To find the right height for decorative shutters, measure from the top edge to the bottom edge of your window trim. Since window frames aren’t always perfectly even, take this measurement on the left side, the middle, and the right side of the window, using the smallest of these three measurements as the shutter height to ensure a proper fit.
The goal is for your shutters and window trim to cleanly align. Shutters that are too tall or short will look mismatched, while correctly sized shutters create a polished appearance.
To ensure that functional shutters properly open and close, use a tape measure to find precise window height and width measurements rather than just aiming for visual balance.
Step 1: Determine Width
Similar to decorative shutters, begin by measuring the distance from the inside left of the window opening to the inside right. Since openings aren’t always perfectly square, take this measurement in three places: across the top, the middle, and the bottom of the window. Use the smallest of these three measurements as your window width.
To find the correct shutter size, divide that number by two to find the proper width of each individual shutter. If your narrowest measurement is 26 inches, choose two shutters that are each 13 inches wide.
Step 2: Determine Height
Next, measure from the inside top of your window opening to the inside bottom to determine its height. Once again, take this measurement in three places: along the left side, the center, and the right side of the window. Because openings can slightly vary, always use the smallest of these three measurements to determine your shutter height, ensuring your shutters will properly fit within the frame and close without binding.
