5 Ways to Make Your Home Cozy on a Budget

Let your house do the talking with these cozy decor ideas!

Cozy Decor Bedroom

Whether you are in a short-term rental or your forever home, it’s important to put your mark on a space. While undecorated homes can feel stark or bland, you might be surprised at how easy it is to transform any room into a comfortable cozy living space.

When you think of a cozy home, you might imagine a plush sofa with lots of thick blankets and fluffy pillows next to a blazing fireplace with a cup of cocoa perched nearby. Cozy homes are warm and inviting and feel comfortable and casual.

If you are decorating your home, or just looking for cozy home decor ideas, these tips will help you achieve that warm, homey vibe without breaking the bank.

Keep a Simple Color Scheme

A cozy home should feel calm and serene. A busy color scheme can be distracting. Focus on a neutral color palette with one to two complementary accent colors that you can bring in through furniture and decor.

Painting is an easy to make existing decor monochromatic. Spray paint is perfect for smaller accessories, while latex or chalk paint can be used on wooden furniture. If you already have a lot of pillows, consider sewing or purchasing new covers instead of buying new pillows.

Add Texture

If everything in your home is the same color and texture, it will look flat and less cozy. Instead of adding tons of colors and patterns, focus on adding monochromatic texture. Stick to the simple color palette that you already established and figure out how you can pull in a variety of finishes in that color scheme.

You can easily add texture with throw blankets, pillows, upholstered furniture, rugs, or curtains. Think about mixing in smooth fabric, like cotton, with nubby materials, like sweater knits. Add velvet, faux furs, or wools for a variety of looks.

Additionally, non-fabric furniture and accessories can have interesting textures. Try to mix smooth metal with raw wood or bumpy stone with shiny ceramic for a unique and interesting look. Grass cloth or other textured wallpaper can instantly soften the walls and add an unexpected pop of texture. Think about the texture of each item and try to have a wide variety for a balanced look.

Alternate Lighting Sources

Nothing kills the cozy factor quicker than a bright overhead light. Instead, look for alternative lighting sources. This could be candles, lamps, sconces, or even twinkle lights draped around the room. There is nothing cozier than a crackling fireplace, so light yours if possible. If not, consider clustering a group of candlesticks for a similar vibe. Natural light is another wonderful way to make a home feel more cozy.

If your lighting is still feeling too bright, consider swapping out any cool-tone light bulbs for those with more of a golden glow to them. Light Bulb color depends on the temperature of the bulb. Look for bulbs with a lower temperature – 2,000 to 3,000 degrees Kelvin – for that warm, golden glow.

Select Natural Elements

When selecting cozy decor for your cozy home, focus on materials that occur in nature. Look for wood furniture in a natural color without a glossy finish. Painted furniture can often be sanded or scraped to reveal the natural wood tones underneath. You can even get contact paper that looks like grass cloth, reclaimed wood, or brick and use that to add a new look to an existing bookshelf or tabletop.

Shop Unfinished Furniture

Plants automatically give a space a cozy feeling. To fit multiple plants into one space, display them in different ways. You may have hanging planters, pots on shelves, or a large potted tree on the floor. Vary the heights of your plants to create a layered look. Pair plants strands with textured pots that coordinate with your color scheme, and they will feel like another piece of furniture.

Corral Clutter

While a cozy home is by no means minimalist, having lots of visible clutter is distracting and decidedly not welcoming. The biggest part of being cozy is being able to relax your body and mind without being distracted by what’s around you. Using containers to corral clutter will instantly clean up your space and make it feel more relaxing.

The easiest way to eliminate clutter is by corralling it in bins, boxes, and baskets. Look for containers made of natural materials – like wicker or wood – that coordinate with the color scheme in your home. Cardboard shipping boxes can even be covered with a neutral wrapping paper to get an instant high-end look, practically for free.

Shop Storage Baskets

A cozy home feels warm, inviting, and comfortable. If your home is feeling cold, sterile, or just not “you,” consider adding some cozy elements. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to transform your space into a cozy haven!
